You can’t bank on a lotto win the way you could 10-15 years ago though. Nor is where you finish where you draft - just ask all the bottom teams who got bumped up to third or fourth. Imagine the jealousy around here if we won the Lafreniere lottery instead of the Hughes one and the Rangers had lucked into him off a playoff year instead of Laf?
I shudder at the thought.

But I don't think the universe would allow that. The Rangers are the ultimate anti-homegrown talent organization.

We weren’t even trying to tank per se in the Nico year though it almost couldn’t be helped regardless. I still remember people losing their shit when John Moore won a meaningless OT game against the Flyers that bumped us up two spots…and right into a lotto win as it worked out
Zajac against Buffalo? Or it was a win goal that leads us to Phlyers play off series in 2010? Or it was two different cases?

I’m sure it was a zajac/zacha goal against florida late in fbe year that added a slot to our position the year we won the lottery to get Hughes

Edit: yup it was a zajac ot goal last game of the year against Florida. It flipped the devils to 3 and LA to 2

La woulda won the lottery and devils woulda been drafting 5 instead

It's easier to win the lottery now than it was in 2016-2021. Finishing last now guarantees you a top 3 pick. The #1 overall pick isn't always the best player out of the draft - or did you miss all the we-should've-taken-Makar-or-Pettersson that was all the rage around here for the last 3+ years?

The Devils weren't tanking in 2017 but they weren't trying very hard, so it doesn't much matter, does it? They didn't have to do anything to be awful. They made some UFA signings but nothing major and dealt for Hall and poof, Schneider falls apart and they're terrible.

The Devils are likely still a decent team with Laf instead of Hughes. But again, where are they at if they get McDavid instead of Edmonton, or any of the number of things which broke for and against them over this period? Having a plan is critical, even if Shero's half-assed planning was lucky, he definitely wasn't planning to compete for the playoffs in any year besides 2019-20.

I was not overwhelemed at first. But I slept on it and realized a couple of things

1) I didn't want to give up a lot for a rental. But this is more then a rental. We have, at minimum, an additional year of his rights / playing season.
2) The condition on the 2nd helps. If that condition is met, then I don't mind giving it up a first.

So what did we give up?
- Zetterland - has value but you give him up every day of the week.
- Mukhamadullin - *could* be a beast in the NHL.... likely not. And if he does hit his ceiling it will likely be years from now
- Okhotiuk - is a fine player, but not likely an impact.
- 2023 First - will be outside the top 16 this year. Still value - but you give that up for Meier.
- 2024 2nd / 1st - This is a second. If the condition is met then it was worth it. And if we stink in 2023-2024 - its at least top 10 protected.

We didn't give up any of our best prospects. Our potential 2 firsts have solid conditions. Worst-case the 2nd to a first can get pushed out to 2025.

I think this was extremely savvy. It's not completely bullet proof - but we have a lot of protection on those picks we sent.
Exactly. The idea is to get Meier long-term and I see no reason why it wouldn’t get done, for a variety of reasons discussed already.

They still have Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec. Can't ask for anything better. Two potential top pairing defensemen still in the fold.

We really voltroned this deal. Lots of quantity but all our best pieces stayed here.

It's a B for now, but becomes an A with an extension. I'm also fully confident an extension will get done along with Bratt.

I'm really not worried about it same way I wasn't worried about this deal falling apart. It just like Fitz was dead set on making this happen

If Tatar and Graves are willing to take some team first deals to go cup chasing I think they can potentially make it work even if it's tight.

It depends how much we spend on goaltending next year

Hopefully only a little over $4 million or whatever Vitek + Schmid comes out to, not including the last year of Cory's buyout.

Bringing back Blackwood for anything more than a million is stupid. Schmid is a wash with Blackwood at worst and that's only even assuming he's overachieving right now. Blackwood is a waste at $3+ million for a cap ceiling team.

I can't imagine giving that shit bag a raise over what he's making this year, after he's underperformed the entire f***ing deal.

And that's also how you get into another one of these situations like we're currently in with Wood, where we're wondering why we don't have a few extra bucks in space at the deadline, because we had to pay a goalie that's worth $1-$1.5 at most $3+ million bucks.

I don’t even remember that one, this is the game I was referring to, I remember the collective freak out over this more vividly than the Urbom lost on waivers insanity, and I just kept saying who gives a ****, it’s a weighted lottery and we’re wailing over 2% in the odds

I should have known I put up the Bleed signal when mentioning goalies.

That said I agree. Blackwood can't be back next year. Question is whether they stick with Schmid as the backup or try to find a vet

I'd give Schmid a chance, as we could use the cap relief in going with him over someone who may or may not be better for several million.

I wouldn't be surprised if Schmid falls off a little bit the remainder of the year, if only because he's probably playing a little unsustainably high right now. He's probably not an almost .930% goalie like he has been this year.

I didn't look at the boxscore yet

Was that a game we won 1-0 in OT with Kinkaid in net and Steve Mason for the Flyers? Who was then winless, and remained winless against the Devils through his entire NHL career.

I can't remember who scored the goal lol. Was it John Moore?

Yup, that was the game I thought it was. I took a wild guess with Moore and was right. I don't really remember him scoring. I have no recollection of that.

More days go by and more I think that we gave up nothing. We got Timo for peanuts. I legit feel sorry for Sharks fans cause they shouldve gotten way more. Not one premium asset, I would be livid.

Zetterlund is fine but his absolute peak would be a top-6 player, probably more middle-6. His age doesnt necessarily fit SJ timeline either. Maybe they can trade him for a Coleman type return or something if his development continues and they can bridge him for cheap?

Muk could be a good top 4. Or he could leave for Russia after first obstacle. Or he could bust. He's far from a sure thing and still a complete lottery ticket. I would say he becomes a decent NHLer though and probably helps SJ the most out of these players.

Draft picks were talking high 20s low 30s, theyre nothing. Okh probably carves himself a top-6 d role.

To me, SJ got quantity over quality. You cant do that when youre trading a star player. You need to get one premium asset and late 1st, Z or Muk aint that.

I dont know whether Fitz offered Holtz or they didnt want him but he shouldve been on this package 100% if I look at it from SJ perspective. Chance to reunite him with Eklund, you need to take a gamble to see if he puts it together.

I do this trade 10 times out of 10 even if I knew Timo wouldnt sign here longterm. Thats worth even for 2 playoff runs.

When was the last time any player with one RFA year to go was traded for a premium asset? Not a draft pick, a really top young player who was already starting to break out.

I get that, but at the very least they shouldve gotten a better 1st rounder from someone. STL had multiple firsts, I'd rather have VGK first than NJ.

Was there a clear indication that Meier wasnt gonna sign with anyone or did SJ not allow him to talk with teams? At some point it came out that us and CAR were fine with no extension.

Would he have better value at the draft? Let teams talk with him after SJ season is over and try to acquire top-15 pick+ at the draft.. I get its a gamble with the QO but still.

Like I dont know.. like I'm happy as hell. To me that trade was so easy to make from our perspective even if Timo walks.

if the market isn’t there then san jose couldn’t do anything. we had the best offer, so i’m assuming there were no premium assets or “sure things” on the table. meier is a star player but he has a big cap hit and a huge qualifying offer which limited the teams in play for him.

Youre probably right, but to me its just crazy no one could beat that.

Its like the reverse "FITZ COULDNT BEAT THAT??!!"
