How do we feel about Jakob Chychrun?

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

This is a topic not talked about nearly enough here.

I think the Al. Johansson question has sort of been answered — he’s a really great, high-IQ, solid all-round 3rd pair D who can fill in on the top-4 when needed. Outstanding asset to have. But probably not a long-term partner for Seider if we want to do big things.

Chychrun’s not a perfect player. He’s had his injuries in the past. But nothing really alarming. He’s 26/27 now. AFP projects him at 7yrs @ 7.8M. I think there’s actually going to be a bit of a bidding war on him.

I think it’ll actually end up costing about 7yrs @ 8.6M to get him.

What do you guys think about that?

To me…the way the cap’s going up…the last 4yrs of that ^ deal is going to be like Holl money. Generally, I feel like the championships of the future are going to be won on long-term contracts signed at this bargain time.

IMO, Chychrun is a legit top-pair partner for Seider. Looking at the next FA class, and the next, I dont see anything better. I don’t think we’re going to be able to trade for someone of his talent without giving up too much. I think waiting for 3-4yrs for a 2025 draft pick to develop is going to be too long.

I say do it man. 7yrs @ up to $8.6M

Chychrun — Seider
Edvinsson — Johansson (then ASP)
Chiarot + Gus/Holl (then Johansson)

Then Wallinder slides in for Chiarot next yr.

Why not?

He’ll likely stay in Washington . I don’t think they’ll let him go and I don’t know if I’d want to offer him 9+ a year
We’ll see. I think they want to resign him long term at about 7M/yr.

Deal closer to 9M/yr from us might be too much to match.

And honestly…. This 2025 money is all going to seem like such Monopoly money in 3, 4, 5yrs.

Even Raymond’s deal, or Seider’s already. Is Raymond half the player Marner is?? Bc that’s literally what he’s going to be earning.

Imagine how insane his deal looks 2,3,4,5 yrs from now..

With the way the cap is going up I have no problem over paying for actual good players. If it won’t be us it will be someone else. The times of getting guys like compher and copp need to be over. This team needs to make the playoffs, we will officially have the longest playoff drought in our history after this year. He’s only 27, I don’t see why we should be scared to give him money and term.

my thoughts are that i've never wanted him and never will and that I wish he would actually stick somewhere at some point so I don't have to keep hearing about him every 6 months

He's a free agent, and thusly can sign anywhere he wants to sign.

It's not as if the Red Wings just offer him a contract and he automatically signs it. There's no way to know how high the bidding will go. It's also not a slam dunk that he just follows the most money.

He has once chance to choose where he spends basically the rest of his career.

Red Wings likely will be involved in the process, just like any other free agent that makes sense to them.

Cap is going up 3 yrs in a row protras is in a ridiculous steal of a contract and ovie will probably retire in a few yrs or his salary will decrease . I think they’ll give him the money to stay and looks like he’s found a place where not only he’s succeeding but so is the team. I can be wrong but I can’t imagine he leaves

There’s no way I’m giving marner 15 mill ... the nhl isn’t the nba where you can give out 3-4 guys 15+ and expect to win. I wish there was no salary cap but it is what it is and as much as I’d love to get Schaefer somehow I’d probably think hard and pick misa if we got number 1 cause I don’t know if we can pay 4 guys if pellikka makes it like we all hope one day 9-11 on the back end. If we got Schaeffer I might be inclined to deal pellikka for an absolute stud can’t miss forward 20-24 yrs

Won’t happen but if we believe in johansson even though he’s likely destined to be on the 3rd pair and we think he’s real good we should just give him like 25 mill for 8 yrs, give him a 5 mill signing bonus and hopefully he becomes a massive steal. And he’d probably think he’d never see that kind of money . Even do like the hurricanes throw him 750k x 8 when he’s like 40 yrs old or some stupid crap they did with someone lol

Much rather lock him now if we believe in him at a good cap hit than risk losing him one day cause of the cap and have to sign another Justin holl for 3-4 yrs

You want to sign him for 8 years because he's good. However, you only want to pay him chump change, because, well, he's not good.

Good grief! It just keeps on entertaining.

the way I feel about him is the same way I felt about him. We shouldn't have traded down to get rid of a contract we didn't need to, to try and sign a player that was never coming here, and draft a player whos was never going to make it.

Would have been nice to have gotten him in the draft. 7 or 8 years is a pretty big risk although I know our options are not a lot. If Yerman can pull off a good contract then sure but there is going to be a lot of demand for him and odds are Washington will just lock him in. No doubt they are already working on an extension.

He seems to like Washington, sure…. But haven’t heard anything at all about them even sitting down and talking extension yet.

Sometimes you trade for a player, and it goes much better than you thought it would, and they price themselves out of your long term plans
