Are the top 3 teams in each division assured a playoff spot and the next 2 teams that are wildcard spots?

For example:

1.Boston
2.Detroit
3.Ottawa
4.Toronto
5.Montreal
6.Tampa Bay
7.Buffalo
8.Panthers

Would boston, detroit and ottawa be assured a playoff spot and toronto and montreal would take the wildcard spots?

Bettman's gonna go over it when the schedule is released, i belive,

also, love how you tried to actually predict the standings..

top 3 teams get a spot in the "division C playoffs"

teams #4 and #5 have a shot at a wildcard spot, along with teams #4 and #5 in division D.

Lets assume boston wins our division with 110 pts, and pittsburgh wins division D with 112 points.

and for the wildcards
#4-C Toronto 94
#5-C Montreal 92
#4-D NYR 95
#5-D NJ 91

toronto and nyr get the wildcard spots. Because pittsburgh had more points than boston, toronto enters the "division D playoffs" and plays pittsburgh. NYR enters the "division C playoffs" and plays Boston.

after the first round, the winners of the two division C series play for the division C championship. The winners of the division D series play for the division D championship. Yes, NYR can become division C champions and Toronto can become division D champions.

The Division C Champion and the Division D Champion advance to the 3rd round to play for the Prince of Wales Trophy and the Eastern Conference Championship. The winner advances to the SCF to face the winner of the Clarence Campbell Bowl and Western Conference Champion.

Cool. Thanks for the explanation. :)

Very succinct explanation, nice. :) That wild card sure adds a bit of a different wrinkle.

By the way, in the west, I assume its more of the traditional scenario, where the top 4 in each division make the playoffs, and there is no potential crossover like in the east?

My understanding is that both conferences have the same playoff format.

Top 3 per division, then top two of the remaining teams in conference.

I did not know that part. So the division leaders have an impact on who the wildcards will play.

yes. The 'higher' division winner always plays the 'lower' wildcard. To preserve the 1vs8 matchup advantage i guess.

I wish they had inserted a caveat that said that if there was one wildcard from each division, they simply stay within the division, because if we're doing divisional playoffs, we should try to preserve as many divisional matchups as possible IMO.

So in this scenario, combined with the standings from the OP, the first round matchups would be BOS vs NYR, DET vs OTT, PIT vs TOR and division D's 2nd vs 3rd seeds? and Montreal/NJ don't make the playoffs?
