Hawks only retooled after 2010, so it's not really comparable.
But that being said, in the span of the first fifteen or so years of the salary cap era, we've had three teams knock the door on almost dynasties.
Kings - 2 in 3 years, having lost in the conference finals in the year they didn't win.
Hawks - 2 in 3 years, having lost in the conference finals in the year they didn't win (and the de facto Stanley Cup Final for all intents and purposes), and 3 in 6 years.
Pens - 2 in 2 years, and a damn good chance to get another Cup in the next couple of years.
In other words, two teams that came close and another team that has a good chance at doing it.
Needless to say, the notion that dynasties are impossible in a salary cap era should be completely put to rest by now. Even if the Pens don't win again in the near future, that's three very near misses in a very short time frame for a supposed impossibility.
