I think a logical time frame for this hypothetical is just after the 2018 loss to the Caps when Tom Wilson Derangement Syndrome set in.

Yup- this was the inflection point of the series AND the franchise.

Tom Wilson gets suspended and the Pens lose the next 2 because his replacement was better than Tom Wilson.

Rutherford thinks that getting bigger will prevent teams from doing this stuff and everything crumbled after that.
