Yet Canada is supposed to pretty good at it, and even they haven't been able to beat Finland in more than a decade...

And it being a marginal sport in Canada should not be an excuse, as it's a marginal sport in Finland too. Susanna Tapani, arguably the world's best player right now, would probably only draw a crowd by the stage if she promised to strip on it.

She's an international level hockey player too.

You could make a case for all of these, but if the "no doubt about it" part is to be fulfilled, the list only consists of Canada, Finland and Latvia.

You're correct. In Slovakia soccer's the king. Hockey second though.

A little off topic but she pulled this off in game 2 of the finals: http://yle.fi/urheilu/video_nain_suomen_tehopelaaja_noyryytti_kanadaa_mm-finaalissa/8568668

My wife played provincial-level ringette growing up. Women's hockey was rare if not non-existent. (this was in the 80s to mid 90s) Girls had play ringette. They had no choice.

By the time she was in university (late 90s to early 2000s), women's hockey had grown exponentially and ringette has all but disappeared. Prominence for women's hockey as an Olympic sport as well as the opportunity for NCAA scholarships was pretty much the death knell for ringette in this country.

It wouldn't surprise me if Canada never beats Finland again.

No girl I know plays ringette anymore. My nieces, their friends, anyone. My wife plays women's hockey.

There are some adult leagues where women who grew up playing the sport still play, and it's probably still played in a few isolated places.

In Finland ringette is probably the reason more girls aren't playing hockey. In Susanna Tapani's case, she loves it so much that she left UND after one year (might go back there in the future). She still plays hockey as well since the schedules don't conflict. She's considered to have exceptional team sport skills, though not quite to the same level as Riikka välilä (formerly Nieminen) or Hanna Teerijoki who were both team sports phenoms.

My sister grew up playing with boys (I had to play up against older kids :(, so we could be on the same team) - until Women's hockey actually came around, think it was when she was about 9-10 years old - so probably '97-98. She never even considered ringette, not sure about her friends and their progression when leagues were non-existent. It grew very very fast though and seemed like teams/coaches were recruiting/importing girls from all over.

I really don't see ringette as a much of an option of Canadian women now. They will be pushed into hockey early

Selänne did wonders for team Finland and I'm really excited what Puljujärvi/Aho/Laine/Rantanen/Juolevi/Kapanen/Barkov/Teräväinen/Ristolainen are able to pull off in the near future.

One thing I've never wondered is what hockey would be like if it were played mostly stationary and without blades on sticks.

If we ( Finns) should thank someone for U20 WJC gold it's Jukka Jalonen.
He did excellent job to motivate our young guys to play and that how Finland didn't give up in difficult moments was impressive.

Aho,Laine,Puljujärvi,Barkov,Ristolainen,Teräväinen,Rantanen,Kapanen,Juolevi,Lindell,Honka,Pokka etc.
Is excellent core for Finland's future Olympic and world championships / world cup teams.

Selänne was great in his role but he didn't be part of coaching staff.
So Jalonen deserves all credit what coach can ever get.

Despite this we absolutely suck in soccer/football, haha..

By what logic do you absolutely suck? You're ranked 14th in Europe and you've often taken part in the major tournaments, even winning bronze in the World Cup in 1994. Being 14th in Europe is not bad at all for a country that has the 18th-largest population in Europe, especially if we take into consideration that all of the 13 countries above Sweden in the UEFA ranking have a better climate for soccer.

Pretty weird question right after this tournament, even if OP meant national team results as a whole. For example asking this after the 2014 Gold would have made more sense, since that was more of a team than a talented team. Now we have had both and the junior system probably doesn't stop now that it is finally starting to output talented players instead of 3rd line grinders like in for the past 10-15 years, the dark ages of Finnish hockey.
I think the 2000s were definitely the dark age of Finnish hockey. The 2004 World Cup silver and Olympic silver were the only notable achievements.

Not to mention having one of the top 5 best players in the world.

Maybe their players is underrated. If a team would go long in SC every year their players would start getting recognition.

Scorer list isn t the only measure! See the Boston Bruins! They win the Stanley-Cup 2011 und runners up 2013 despite they havn t the best scorers like Crosby,Ovechkin,Malkin etc..

Think of this: what else is going on in finland? Maybe rally but they think hockey is so important. Ppl go to hockey in finland too. In Sweden most ppl are like meh. In Finland hockeybis almost everything. To beat Sweden Is Everything.

Best ringette team in Finland changed sports to hockey lately. Earlier Hockey wasn't considered womens sport, but now they play in Finland too. Though ringette is still there.

Still it is, if man would play ringette he would be absolute wimp  Though I dont think that ever has even happened. There cant be mens ringette team. They would be laughable.

Team Finland U16 head coach Tommi Niemelä talks goalie development in Finland.

This is actually a great catch, in normal working life I believe on this individual leadership system or the mentality where all employees are kinda entrepreneurs inside the company in the areaea that they do - instead of being strictly lead on their every move. It was interesting to see that it is already took in Hockey teams too, and been succesfull. Glad to see it is succesfull system in hockey. Makes me believe in those kind of systems even more.

Thought I just check what it is, couldn't stop untill I went trough it fully.

It has declined but still exists the rivalry. Finland usually beats every team when they are playing well.

Laughable indeed. But still, there are many laughable things in this world enjoying big popularity - so why not mens' ringette? It would make my day.
