The thing is, if they made the trade, they would have been way more aggressive in free agency, and probably got the team as far away from a top 5 pick next year as possible.

Eh.. might not be a bad thing to save them from themselves and not give out a deal that overpays with a long term in this FA. Also even of the Hawks somehow weren't bad enough to pick top 5, they would still get a great prospect in the 6-10 range. I personally would love McQueen for example.

McQueen could vastly improve or vastly worsen his stock. Same goes for anyone else. D-1 years and earlier aren't super relevant.

Davidson did try and grab both Demidov and Levshunov. Waddell drives a hard bargain . If Blackhawks were willing to deal next years pick maybe they are signing some legit Ufa's .

Oh no doubt. And there will likely be a Sennecke like prospect who jumps out of nowhere and will be in that range. It goes both ways.

Picks the "big strong physical guy" with freaking back issues over an unconditional 1st + from a team built to tank with potential to win the lotto again. If he took anyone else I get it, but he took his kinda guy while ignoring one of the biggest red flags a prospect can have over a possible haul.

Not really , Demidov is a premium prospect , I would have done the same as the offer to Blue Jackets

A league source said the Blackhawks offered their 2025 first-round pick unprotected and a 2025 second-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for their 2024 No. 4 pick. The source described the deal as “close” to happening.

Ultimately, as The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reported, the Blue Jackets were too high on center Cayden Lindstrom and turned down the Blackhawks’ offer. The Blackhawks’ dream of pairing Levshunov with Demidov faded away with it.

If they held the Toronto 1st out of trade talks, they obviously don't like Demidov that much. They could've been far more aggressive with their offer.

According to the CHGO guys, Brian Hedger told Laz and Powers that had Lindstrom been taken by Anaheim, the Blue Jackets would have made the trade.

Obviously they liked Demidov (assuming that it was him they were going for). But not more than Levshunov.
