How bad is Tanner Glass?

Yeah, and that's definitely Glass's fault. Good eye. Why aren't you a pro scout?
Well, what else can be a reason, huh? Did we trade one of the league's best penalty killers last summer at the draft while I wasn't looking or something?

You would think with all of his hits that he would contribute SOMETHING to the team. And he really doesn't. I can't believe a big guy cannot establish corner work at all. He just isn't good.

Even with all of the hits he collects, I can't recall one big one.

Glass has a terrible Corsi, both 5v5 and 4v5. And he's 4th WORST IN THE LEAGUE in GVT. http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_statistics.php?c=0+1+3+5+4+6+7+8+13+14+29+30+32+33+34+45+46+63+67&ds=1&f3=TANNERGLASS&f1=2012_s+2011_s+2010_s+2010_p+2009_s+2009_p+2008_s+2007_s

These stats aren't definitive, but they are consistent. Glass is brutal. And it's not like it's just this season, he's been terrible his entire career. The only reason he continues to have a job is b/c he hits and fights and those attributes are given too much credit.

He wasn't brought in to fight, or hit, or score, or kill penalties. He was brought in to make the team better. He doesn't, in any facet. Glass is a bad NHL player and there are several options available that are clearly better than him.

tl;dr Glass is terribad. Has been his entire career, stats back it up.

Neither are these are definitive, but I can't really argue with their conclusions from what I see. Glass is brutal.

There is no world in which Glass and Adams are better hockey players than Vitale and Jeffrey. Anybody who argues otherwise is just wrong. Plain and simple.

Glass really sucks. By far the worst FA signing for Shero IMO. Overpaid and doesn't contribute solidly anywhere.

That said, the PK sucks this year not because of Glass. This is on Shero. Shero moved Staal and Michalek, who were both #1 for Forwards and #1 for Defensemen for the Pens for SH TOI. We didn't really replace Michalek with anyone and we now have Glass/Sutter for Staal. What did he expect would happen?

For **** sake people. The PK sucks because of the system they use, not the personnel. They are passive by design. They front the shooter and leave the guy alone in front of the net by design. They don't try for score shorthanded goals so they can get quick changes by design.

I don't give a **** who is out there. Until they fix HOW they PK, it won't matter WHO is PK'ing.

It's the same system from last year.

Big difference in execution. The major difference is Michalek and Staal being gone.

Last year they were aggressive and didn't completely ignore guys in front of the net. They also tried scoring shorthanded. So no this isn't the same as last season.

I'm not going to blame Tanner Glass for our PK sucking, I'm simply blaming Tanner Glass for sucking.

Honestly, it's incredible how bad he really is. He's not good defensively, he lacks hockey sense/vision, is useless when the puck is on his stick, and while he hits, he's too damn slow a skater to actually get there to cause turnovers. He basically just finishes his checks after the player has long since passed the puck up the ice.

The crazy thing is I'm not even bothered by his lack of offensive ability. Yeah, it does kind of suck to have a 4th line that can't score ever. But I was hoping Glass would at least be a good defensive player who could punish with big hits. He's not.

How does that happen? How does a team sign a guy to be a 4th line defensive/physical/PKer, and that guy end up being bad at all three of those things?

Oh really? I'd like to see some proof of this. Why would the Pens mess with a top 3 PK from last year if it was working?

It's the same system minus two very important players that ate up PK minutes. Plus add in that Adams has lost any of his worth and here we are.

Worst signing? No. We lost Rupp and Asham, and you have to have a guy who can drop the gloves (in theory, anyway). Worst player on our roster, however? Definitely. There is no reason at this point that he should ever play in a role higher than 13th forward. Vitale and Jeffrey and Adams are all >>>>> better than Glass.

At least we didn't trade for him, he was a UFA. But we do need to upgrade our 4th line. Thankfully we can do that in house with Joe Victory. I don't understand why just dress Adams-Jeffrey-Vitale evey night, or at least just dress 7 Dmen so we can get both Bortuzzo and Despres in every night. Glass should never play, unless there's injury. But I would like to see Vitale get an opportunity on the PK. Hell, I'd rather use Bortuzzo as a forward than Glass.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised to see Adams being dragged into the discussion along with Glass. Aside from maybe a game or two, Adams has been fine. He's doing everything you would expect a 4th liner who gets 625k a year to do. He's physical, plays well on the PK and is usually the first guy to jump in and stick up for a teammate. I'm really not getting why he's being lumped in with Glass at this point.

I agree 100% with the bolded. While ideally I'd like to add more size/physicality to the bottom six, of the guys we *do* currently have on the roster, the 4th line should be comprised of Jeffrey-Vitale-Adams every single game.

Glass should be a healthy scratch unless we have an injury. The fact that he's played all 25 games this season, while Vitale and Jeffrey have rotated in and out of the lineup, is one of Bylsma's biggest coaching faux pas.

Shero really does need to take away Bylsma's toys. He simply can't help himself.

Shero is like that enabling parent that can't say no to his kids. You know Bylsma was sitting in Shero's office when UFA hit begging him to sign more grinders like Tanner Glass etc. and Shero predictably caved in.

Doesn't Glass do the same?

He skates well, can play on the PK and he hits hard and often. What the hell did people want from a 4th liner? Maybe he will chip in when we least expect it, like the playoffs when guys like that usually step their game up when you least expect it.

He rarely takes shots on net, but at least he's not shooting 4ft wide like Adams or throwing a stupid late hit or attempting to fight someone and getting beaten badly.

There are a lot of teams that will want his physicality come playoff time. People here want him gone, then they'll be saying when we're out "man I wish we had some toughness on this team in the bottom 6."

What are they? Eleven million under the cap or something like that even with this signing? What he is paid is irrelevant when you are so far below the cap. Unless you are Burkle and signing the paychecks I suppose. But to you or me? Does not matter at all. All that matters is how he is playing.

I know this might sound lame, but you'd have to know Tanner to get the whole scope of his value to a hockey team. He's one of those glue guys that everyone likes and he sticks up for everyone. Sure his skillset is limited in the NHL, but his personality/character is very unique.

Doesn't Glass do the same?

Well, to be clear, I'm not really as on-board with the Glass criticisms as everyone else either. But it could probably be argued that, if there is a difference, it's that Adams is probably a better PKer and comes at roughly half the cost.

That said, I don't think the 4th line is as bad as everyone is making it out to be and I think Glass is fine in his role for the most part. My post was less a criticism of Glass and more meant to be in defense of Adams.

AT the start of the season I liked Glass. The 4th line was rolling it. It could stay in the O zone for most of their shift. Now that the talented players have their timing back though I don't see him doing much but that goes with the whole 4th line.

its not the same system. its way more passive this year. We just try to clog lanes and block shots. But we don't do it. It was aggressive last year. 3rd in the league in short handed goals.
