Today Patrick Kaleta replied to me personally via facebook messenger and absolutely made my day. My fiance was probably more excited for me than I was. I never would have expected an athlete would respond to a personal message sent to their facebook but within 4 hours Patty answered me back in the middle of my fiance's birthday dinner. The whole night she kept pestering me saying, "what are you gonna say back to him? I can't believe he answered you!". Granted I'm a huge Kaleta homer and a Rochesterian who watched almost every home game he played so he's always been a favorite. I met him once at a meet and greet and got his autograph but that's so impersonal. I know this is off tangent and a bit slightly off topic but I wanted to give kudos to Pattie for really making my day and personally taking the time to answer me on facebook 1 on 1. I really think it shows the class he has and the love for local support. It's a minor thing to most people who read this but it was awesome for me and hats off to Pat for taking the time out for a fan.

He was my lab partner in chemistry at St. Francis. Really good guy, smart, and grounded. Glad to see he's still got it.

Billy Dea - AHL Hall Of Fame Page - http://ahlhalloffame.com/billy-dea

Edmonton native Billy Dea spent more than half of his 19-year professional career in the American Hockey League, where his consistency, durability and reliability made him one of the league’s all-time greats.

After seeing time in the National Hockey League with New York, Detroit and Chicago, Dea made his AHL debut with the Buffalo Bisons on October 8, 1958. Over the next eight seasons, Dea played in every single one of the Bisons’ contests, breaking Bill Needham’s league ironman record on Christmas night in 1965. Dea finally missed a game on February 12, 1966, ending the streak at an amazing 548 straight (plus 48 more in the playoffs) – a mark that may never be broken.

A hard-working and popular winger, Dea had his most productive offensive season in 1960-1961, when he set career bests with 35 goals and 74 points. He helped the Bisons return to the league finals in 1962, and was an important part of their Calder Cup championship team in 1963.

Billy Dea spent nine seasons in Buffalo, eclipsing the 20-goal mark each year and reaching the 50-point plateau six times. He returned to the NHL with Chicago, Pittsburgh and Detroit before finishing his playing career with the AHL’s Tidewater Wings in 1971-1972.

Eric Boulton is the lone survivor of his draft class and among the last of a dying breed. For more than two decades, he has done everything to impress his teammates -- from fighting heavyweights to eating raw potatoes.

I wish other fan bases knew more about his personal life and judged him less on his one ice antics. That's awesome that you got to know him like that. Thanks for sharing!

Clint Malarchuk arrived at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Saturday not expecting to play in a game. The 55-year-old former goaltender, who played 10 NHL seasons for the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres, was there to help lead a Hockey Is For Everyone month event with members of the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program.

"They said come out and do some drills or whatever," Malarchuk said. "Then, I saw that referee and I said, 'Why don't you come out and we'll have a scrimmage and it will probably be more fun for them?'"

About 15 minutes into the scrimmage, Malarchuk decided to join one of the teams and take a regular shift on defense, using a borrowed stick and a set of gloves belonging to Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie (who was on the road facing the Montreal Canadiens). "It ended up being a good time," Malarchuk said. "It was a lot of fun."

Tony McKegney felt lucky to be drafted by the Buffalo Sabres. Western New York was bound to be a good place for him to make his National Hockey League debut. They had the Buffalo Bills. They had the Buffalo Braves. They were accepting of professional athletes of color even if hockey was still played predominately by white Canadian men.

“In my journey I was very lucky to go to Buffalo. If I went to some other place, like Atlanta, my experience would have been very different,” said McKegney, who was drafted by the Sabres in 1978 and played his first four NHL seasons in Buffalo. “I was very well accepted in Buffalo by comparison. I thought the people of Buffalo had the experience of having black football players coming from other areas to play in Buffalo and the same with basketball players. I just felt like I was very fortunate to go to a place like Buffalo. It was really welcoming to me.”

That welcoming experience has not been universal for black hockey players which is why McKegney was on his way to Buffalo Wednesday morning. The veteran of 912 NHL games is part of a new documentary “Soul on Ice: Past, Present and Future” and was part of a screening and discussion Wednesday at the Amherst Dipson Theatre. Proceeds benefitted Hasek's Heroes).

Nikita Zadorov out for the season with fractured ankle suffered in practice.

@MikeChambers -
Nikita Zadorov just injured in practice. Knee or ankle. Doesn't look good. Required help off ice.
Zadorov got tangled with Rantanen. Both went down. Zadorov to room. Rantanen back on ice.
Zadorov went straight to trainers room with equipment on.
Coach Bednar says Nikita Zadorov being evaluated. No update at this time.
Nikita Zadorov's fractured ankle, out for season.

On the last Avalanche drill Monday, young Avs defenseman Nikita Zadorov became tangled with forward Mikko Rantanen, fell to the ice and required assistance to get to the trainers’ room because of a leg injury. Hours later, Colorado announced Zadorov sustained a fractured ankle and will be out for the season. Zadorov, 21, has played in all but one game this season and leads the Avs in hits with 153. His is averaging 19:02 in ice time but was in the mid-20s for most of the last month. “He got tangled up with Mikko and actually fell on top of Mikko but his leg got trapped underneath Mikko and (he) fell awkwardly,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said immediately after practice.
