Yep. It's profitable. Few waves,, easy money just keep selling the hope and that we are contenders until we can't. Then do something and have a new excuse or fall guys brought in.

It's only Tuesday. There will be a lot of deals between now and the deadline on Friday, including by the Leafs.

I guess it depends on how we define "big" move. The Leafs will absolutely acquire a third line centre, so it's just a function of how impactful that player is.

A 3rd/4th for Schenn as is, or a 2nd for Schenn with 50 % retention for 2 years sounds about right.

Treliving should NOT give up Minton, Cowan or 1st for that Laughton. Even with the way that Robertson is playing as of late, I don’t trade him for that guy.

I would rather roll the dice with Minton at 3 C for the playoffs.

I dont get why everyone figures we need to give up our top 3 prospect when the Oil basically gave up nothing for a double retained Frederic, who I would have loved the leafs to grab, and hope they chase as a UFA.
my top targets arent a #3C, it would only be RHD. Ritso, and Carlo should not be too costly to acquire and if cheap enough, I'd try to grab both.

Lou is crazy, he'll prob trade Dobson and reup Nelson. Domi and Jarn are both 'Lou' type players, underwhelming, maybe he will be a buyer.
Mind you, the Isles are loaded with quality D, i'd take any of them here.
Tre should be asking about Pulock for sure, if they plan on retaining Dobson, as they have 5 RHD on the roster i think, and need some cap relief on the back end

I'm genuinely curious how you think Dubas handcuffed Tre...

Was it leaving him the top 7 scorers on the team?

Cheap depth in Holmberg, McMann, Robertson, and Timmins?

Not trading away top prospects for help like Knies?

Was it leaving good trade chips like Cowan and Minten?

Leaving McCabe at $2 million?

The cap has already gone up more under Treliving's term than Dubas'...

I don't think Treliving was handcuffed at all... he managed to spend 6 picks last year, he has draft capital and prospects this year if he wants, it is all his choice.

The biggest need, by far, is a proper 1RHD.

it's a testament to how poorly this team has been run during the Matthews era that even after all these years the biggest need this deadline is the exact same as it has been for the last ten. A proper 1RHD. Someone to push the rest of the guys down a spot in the lineup where they more properly belong.

Bringing in a hack like Luke Schenn wouldn't be good enough.

Don't worry about overpaying either. Failing to improve the defense would be the most unacceptable result of this deadline. Less acceptable even than making an unfair trade to do so.

Get the best player available regardless of cost.

Trouba and Jones both went for a price the Leafs could afford. Either one of those guys would have been an immediate and significant upgrade on what they have currently. If they don't do anything to get better this deadline it just proves what the fans already know.

They're a pretender contender with no real desire to win it all.

Neither of those guys are 1RHD. Those type of players are rarely traded or available at the trade deadline. A second pairing RD is more realistic. The price will be high and if the core group don’t score in the playoffs it won’t matter anyway.

A #1 d-man isn't a trade deadline move in most cases, it's a "wait until July and see if Ekblad doesn't re-sign" move (he likely will, it was just an example).

Or get the next closest thing with Jones @$2.5M retained for a first and (likely) Woll, except the Panthers beat us to it.

Like Treliving suggests, the East isn't as open as some believe (and I agree, the Panthers and Bolts are both very strong as well as the Caps - The Leafs could still drop as low as #3 in the division which pretty much erases any notion that they are a legit SC "favourite" or even top contender) so the smart thing is to be smart about it.

They absolutely need a 3C, no one disputes that. If the price for Laughton is reasonable, then that's a sensical pickup. A dependable (play and health-wise) 3rd pairing veteran d-man would also make sense.

After that, not sure what else is out there? And by Treliving's own comments he doesn't sound like he's in the mindset to go all-in, unless as was pointed out earlier he's just being coy. I doubt it.

I think he has concerns over Matthews' health and whether this team really has figured it out yet. No doubt they are better, the best goalie tandem since forever, solid blueline etc., but will the big boys finally step up and deliver this spring? As of today, does anyone really believe they can get by the Panthers, as they almost certainly will have to to get out of the division? Would say, the Schenn brothers be enough to tilt that matchup in the Leafs favour?

Hard to say without knowing what is available. I think personally we should be adding a piece with term this deadline and using whatever other assets to improve at the draft / offseason to reload for next year. The time is now IMO

Wouldn't you want to do Marner for Rantanen? I think they wanted him anyways and if not. Knies is a key core component for me and the future of this team if winning is the goal.

For Rantanen I would sooner give up futures, Cowan or whatever but Knies is off limits unless it's a sign and trade where we give 12m for Rantanen 8 years. Marner is defacto gone.

Marner isn’t waving his NMC and Rantanen isn’t signing in Toronto. We need to be realistic about this team and where they’re at. Big decisions this offseason and a rising cap mean patience might be the smarter play. I don’t see them beating the Panthers to get to a Conference final so should they mortgage their future to maybe win one round ? None of the moves they‘Ve made at the deadline the past eight seasons have moved the needle because they’re star players can’t get it done.
