You can't be ruthless when half of your cap is attached to five players. TJHEY have to get it done, period.
The rest is window dressing. They illustrated after the loss to the Habs that this core was never going to get it done. Then they lost with a pretty good team assembled at the deadline a couple of years ago.
Pick up some improvement pieces and hope the goaltending and D do their job. No overpayments, no sexy one and done pickups. Otherwise unless the star players become Mark Messier playoff performers all of a sudden, the team MUST move the overpaid dead wood.
Just accept as I have that this franchise will never obtain the level of greatness and sacrifice needed to win the Cup. It makes it easier to watch the games. Acceptance is the final stage in the grieving process.
