Knies - Schenn - McMann would be a ridiculous power forward 3rd line
Domi - Matthews - Nylander
Patches - Tavares - Marner
Knies - Schenn - McMann
There is going all in and there is being stupid. Most GM's get stupid and rentals rarely pay off as they arrive too late to gel and know they are leaving. Minten and a first for Laughton is a gross overpayment and won't give you a cup. We need another dman i.e Schenn since he fits here, another C and a bottom 6 banger and crash guy just to win 2 rounds. To win a cup? We don't have the pieces. None of our prospects allow to us to outbid other GM's. Our first rounder next year is practically a 2nd rounder so it doesn't hold that much value. I'd trade it for Laughton and hang onto Minten. I'd then target Schenn and hope a good bottom 6 pops up. I don't think Tre will have an easy time getting impact guys like Crosby.
If we need to move Domi to make room for B.Schenn, I'd prefer Laughton. Laughton + Domi > Schenn, imo.Swap Marner and Nylander
I've always wanted to see what Domi Matthews Marner could do.
At the same time if Schenn is acquired Domi is probably part of it because money has to go out.
I saw it proposed somewhere. People always think the Leafs have to pay more so they come up with stupid trades.Swap Marner and Nylander

Who said ANYTHING about Minten AND a 1st for Laughton??

I'd give them next year's first. Anyone we draft will be way outside our window, if ever.I could see Minten Or a 1st but not both

I'd be all-in without the slightest hesitation.
I don't get why everyone is so desperate for a #2C, though. Tavares more than fills that for this season, and we have players in the system that can be a good 3 and 4. I don't think C is a significant problem.
I'd be aiming for a winger who can also play C as an insurance move. Someone like Granlund would be perfect.
And I'd be trying to find a top pair defenceman, preferable someone with term who can stabilise Rielly a bit. This is the best the blueline has ever looked in this era. But adding a top guy to pair with Mo would make it one of the best in the league.
I think Domi has a chance to get hot down the stretch.I might the biggest Domi defender on this website.
I don't think he's been healthy nor do I think he's been used properly.
In an ideal world both Domi and Schenn would be on the 3rd line come playoff time.
But Even as a Domi fan I have to wonder if Brayden Schenn style isn't better suited for the playoffs.
I kind of think it is.
He was actually riding an unsustainable 70 point pace in his short sample with Matthews last year.He was playing at better than a point-per-game pace with Matthews last season. I saw some ridiculous stat that had him on a 100+ point-per-82-game pace with Matthews last season or some ridiculous stat.
Link?He was actually riding an unsustainable 70 point pace in his short sample with Matthews last year.
I just looked it up myself. They were put together March 19th (verified on NaturalStatTrick), and played 14 games. Domi had 12 points in 14 games.Link?
We all know our best trade assets have no movement clausesYou are correct but leafs management and some fans are paralyzed by fear to make significant changes.
Some think that without current player “A” or player “B” we are automatically worse and can’t win
I know but at some point they have to make some hard choices and it would suck to lose a couple of these guys for nothing the alternative giving them another round of crazy contracts is worse. We all know our best trade assets have no movement clauses
Had they not signed Tavares and the 3 to the ridiculous contracts they could have pivoted when they realised they weren’t good enough players. Now you have throw all the chips on the table because the worst thing will happen is a complete rebuild which really isn’t that bad.I know but at some point they have to make some hard choices and it would suck to lose a couple of these guys for nothing the alternative giving them another round of crazy contracts is worse.
When Dubas realized the cap was not going up he should have pivoted and traded one of them.
In fact he should never ever went out and got Tavares
leafs don't have the capacity they need to swap roster players for roster playersBased on what we have to offer and what is available, we need to lower our expectations. I'm now seeing us not making a huge splash. They may want to but who is there?

Dubas acted like the cap was already 100 millSigning Tavares didn't make anyone untradeable, nor did it force Dubas to sign Matthews and marner to double digit contracts.
If Matthews and marner came in a million over Nylander it would have made sense.
Four million more than Nylander was the issue, not the Tavares UFA signing.
Dubas failure.
No it wouldn't. They were significantly better players than Nylander. They're supposed to get paid a significant amount more.If Matthews and marner came in a million over Nylander it would have made sense.

Leafs got McCabe and Lafferty from the Hawks for a 1st and a 2nd and got 50% retention for two years on McCabe. They got O'Reilly and Acciari with 50% retained on $7.5M for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Dubas traded picks years down the road and Tre can do the same. O'Reilly second time around does not cost 1-2-3 picks and Connor Murphy will not require 2 years retention so will not cost a 1st and a 2nd. They can do that. Sean Walker got Philly a 1st last year but they had to take a salary dump for an extra year at $8M per.Based on what we have to offer and what is available, we need to lower our expectations. The team has failed to win the cup thus far, but the contracts were not mistakes. They've been our best players, regular season and playoffs, and we'd be in a much worse place if we didn't have them. And yet, they failed year after year in the playoffs and came up short.
They didn't earn the 50% more when the games truly counted.
Those contracts proved to be mistakes.
