No sarcasm emoji so what are you basing that extremely optimistic number on? The generous sacrifices of the big 3 on their deals aside, JT might take something a bit under market value but anything in the 7s is giving money away.
Nobody knows the dynamics for certain, but like EH I have a sneaking suspicion that leverage is wildy disproportionate in this negotiation, and he signs for something like that. If he finishes the season super strong, maybe more, but it will be a very generous contract.

If the type of guy needed is available and the price is right (exemple the coleman trade or lehkonen trade or barbashev trade), yes you should do it but leafs are not as desesperate to absolutly make something happen this season.
Depending on Marner that's possible to be very false.

They have 30+ million in Cap space in the off season they can absolutely keep Marner if they choose to, the question is will they choose to?

They absolutely can.
It's like they think his 11 million dollar hit wasn't already on the books.

Leafs are playing like they want to lose to the Sens being up 3-1 in R1 and add another milestone of failure

Keep the 1st round pick. I wouldn't trade for any rentals.

Next year we should be more competitive than this year with Tavares' 11M reduced.
We wont be more competitive movi g forward unless new core players emerge via UFA or Drafted guys

Marner, Matthews, Rielly, Nylander are all just not the guys so even if Tavares f***s off it wont matter

I would keep Tavares at a lower cap hit. Look how bad we look with Domi as our #2C.

I'd walk from Marner. Tavares at 5M or less minus Marner gives us 17M in cap space to work with.

How do we fix Rielly playing like a 2-3M player lol. Signed forever it seems like at a large 7.5M AAV.

What is the difference between what Rielly is giving vs Shayne Ghosto?

What about Nylander making 11.5M and needing to be a Pasta/Point/Rantnanen level guy but being only ppg or so

Matthews i guess can extend grace period for injuries and see how he finishes the year but 13.25M is a lot and in the cap league can we really build a winner if Matthews is injured and/or failing to be a consistent top 5 player league wide?

We have committed LT to our aging defense so not sure if we would use the cap space from letting marner go to add someone there.

Letting Marner go is fine but such piss poor asset management not to move a single core player since 19-20 when playoff failures began to be noted and consistent.

A major retool when core pieces are movee for assets and bring other guys can work in quick fashion

A major retool vs UFAs is so risky and such a ballsy gamble for a team which would have 9 years of epic playoff failure that it just seems like a video game esque lack of planning move that really fans of one of the richest teams in the league should not have to bank their hopes on.

If Rielly doesn't turn it around, you can consider buying him out. His buyout hit is around 3M. So unless you feel you can find a D-man for 5M who's better than him, it doesn't make sense.

Nylander you have to live with. You're not trading him with 11.5M and a full NMC. I never understood the rush to sign that contract mid-season.

You got to re-tool around Matthews-Nylander. Tavares can stay at the right price, but we need a lot more depth. Right now after the core 4, the scoring falls off a cliff.

I find this as a drafting issue personally, our picks have sucked and have for some time. Besides Knies, we have contributed 0 depth from our draft picks to our team in any role yet consistently. Its actually shocking how bad we are at selecting defenders.

Dubas traded like 4 1st rounders. That makes it quite tough.

Comparing Nylander to Pasta, Point, and Rantanen?

Point is a centre, and all three are first line players with more ice time per game.

But Willy has more goals than either of the other wingers (and tied with Point), is only 3 points behind Pasta (with a better +/-), and only Draisaitl and Boldy have more GWG.

We know he's overpaid (thanks Dubas), but there shouldn't be any reason to complain about his production.

Yes, "piss poor" asset and cap management has been the Achilles' heel of the team, but the first real chance to correct any of it will be this summer.

I think it will be the Vatano deal 3yrs x 6mil with deferred money to make the cap hit at 3.75mil

I was thinking that they need to be careful and keep Cowan and Minten, but now I think they should go all in and trade anything and everything if it gives them a chance at making the eastern final. If it doesn’t work, they can unload everyone, Matthews included, and start the rebuild this year with a new president and GM.

I agree, but we still gotta hit from time to time on our other picks. They don't need to be late round picks like Datsyuk, but they should at least be able to be depth so guys like Myers dont need to be on the ice every game. All these years we needed a 3C and have somehow failed to draft one decent centre in all these years. Abramov, Abruezzeze, Hirvonen, Stotts, SDA, etc. Minten still has a chance, I hope.

Vatrano's AAV is $4.57 with this deal. He had 37g last season but is working on 45pts this year. I don't you could base JTs expectations on this player.

Using very superficial math skills $8M with 50% deferred in this way leaves an AAV of around $6M. To get to $3.75 he would have to be accepting around $5M AAV with 50% deferred so a salary of $2.5M over 3 years and the rest beginning in 2035. And he would be doing this soulless act while team Marner is giving Tre the fist on the way to a deal somewhere between Willie and Leon. Can't see that kind of largesse or the club having the balls to ask for it.

But if he takes any deferred money its still a win for the club. My math could be way out so please feel free to correct me. I was just moving the Vatrano numbers around rather than using the present value formula that came up with them.

That would certainly give them a better chance to make a deep run and take some of the heat off Shanny/Pelley but if they go "all-in" and lose in round #1, all hell will break loose in Leafs Nation. Not sure they have the balls to move off the core. They will sell, JT took a discount and run them back like they have in the past.

If they lose in round 1 again they can clean house.

How can you clean house when the tail is wagging the dog and has a full NMC? They won't move Matthews and they are afraid to lose him in 3 years if they are not competitive (even though he is part of the reason they have had little playoff success).
