How many assets would you use for 3+ year term / ELSC player (2026 picks onward) You determine risk

I hate to be my pessimistic Leafs self but I see this team as a mirage. I don't think their position in the standings represents the play I see on ice. Basically, I think they've been lucky. I wouldn't spend any significant assets to "go all in". They need to roll with with they've got. I mean, they already have 4 $11M+ players plus decent goaltending and defense, what more assets do they need? Hard no on my end for going all in. Looks like they need a little defensive depth, that's about it so I picked trading a 2nd rounder in the poll.

I think it's a mirage as well but I think they have no other choice but to go all in because.

2x Contender level tenders.
2x Major contracts expiring.

They may as well throw it all in and if it's a total flop, let JT go or Marner or both and restructure a bit.

All in for the following

A young signed - cost controlled - RFA - C that can play 3rd line this year and in the next season or two move to 2nd line.

A RHD to play with 44 with a contract that goes beyond 2026

A 4th line winger / c to push Dewer out of the line up = Lorentz - Kamph - XXXX

This would be my targets - if I cant do it - I keep my pieces and look for low cost additions with term that can help next year - like the McCabe trade.

Finally - Add what we can to the cap and use a retention spot to secure a few extra pics if possible.

First thing u can't let marner get past the deadline without him being signed
All we need is him not signed and have a lousy playoff then walk
In my book the leafs either sign marner or let this bunch go as far as it can
Marner is in charge now. When July 1st came and went, the option to control Marner was gone. Marner can leave 100% of his own accord now unless Toronto pony's up the dough. He is going to get 13 plus mil somewhere. Marner can leave now and the Leafs get nothing. Has nothing to do with the trade deadline.

Look at it this way. Give Marner his 13 million. This season Marner made 10 million and JT got 11 million for a total of 21 million. Minus Marners 13 million from the 21 and you still get 8 million. Sign JT for 6 million and you still have 2 million to play with. And you still have Marner and JT. Or, let JT walk. There are plenty of young centres out there that can be had for 6 to 7 million.

It's a bit of a highwire stunt I think:

Get assets to fit the NOW mode, but make sure the assets fit the NOW mode for a couple of additional kicks given what may happen July 1st 2025 .

What happened with ROR stings a bit, given we could definitely use his type again this go around.

I don't think you go hard at any deadline until at least two of Marner, Matthews, and Nylander have monster playoffs across more than one round. If that never happens then we never go hard.

But imagine dumping a bunch of prospects and picks for support players and Matthews and Marner once again take turns looking invisible. Won't have made any tangible difference.

Yup. Until they show a lot more will we’re just spinning our wheels.

Apparently according to doug maclean:

"It’s fascinating from a Toronto perspective. According to Pagé, an offer for Lindros from the Maple Leafs included Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Félix Potvin, Dave Ellett, Ken Baumgartner, Darby Hendrickson, and $15 million — only Toronto’s best player, team captain, No. 1 goaltender, top defencemen, and extras. In return, Pagé says, the Leafs would have received Lindros, the fourth overall pick in the 1992 draft, goaltenders John Tanner and Stéphane Fiset, and winger Andrei Kovalenko. "

Too rich for me.
Interesting as that would have meant no Sundin.

Gilmour and Potvin left a few years later for next to nothing. Knowing how history turned out I would be tempted to think about it if the 92 draft wasn't so horrible

This could be it so have to go for it
I can't get my head around how anyone could think otherwise. You have a first place team in a conference that is considerably worse than it has historically been. If not now, what exactly are we waiting for? I would trade anything and everthing that isn't nailed down. The odds of ever assembling this much talent again are so infinitely small that sitting on your hands makes no sense. The reality is that when this generation (i.e., Matthews, Marner, Nylander) have cycled out of their prime, there is no number of late first round picks or second or third line prospects that will change the outcome here. The team will have to rebuild no matter what, so you might as well rebuild with a championship or two in your back pocket.

Slippery slope because they don't have much trade capital and this core can find a way to lose. Gamble and lose and then you got virtually nothing to trade the next two years.

Get that #2C and let it ride. Keep some bullets for next year.

If it's me, I'm trading first and second round picks in future years and taking my chances. I'd rather win now and be terrible later than not quite good enough now and not quite good enough later.

As Fuda said, you do it if you think/guarantees it puts you over the top when he talked about the Kings trade with Philly where they traded Simmons and Schenn for Richards.

I'm not sure they can get that guy who puts them over the top.

As long as they get a 2C with term I don’t care what it costs because it’ll be a long term investment. Our window is now.

Sens lost 4 in a row.. Think it's too early to go woo Brady T outta there and get him to ride shotgun for Matty and Mitch..?? Want to see our boys grow a pair - get a Tkachuk on their line and presto!

I guess it would practically cost a Marner though, and he'd have to waive - so ya.. maybe not.

A fella can dream tho..
There is no f***ing chance in hell that Ottawa is going to trade Tkachuk to Toronto. Like not even a little bit.
