This is 100% the year to go for it.

I don't care about futures in the next 4-6 years, this is as good as it's going to get.

At the bare minimum get a 3c, but a dream target for me is Josi. I'd give up 4 1sts for him or 2 1sts and Cowan and Minten.

Once Matthews/Marner/Nylander are out of their prime, we're probably going to have to rebuild anyways or retool around 1 or two of them.

This is it and honestly probably as good as it's going to get in terms of talent, this group has it in spades, it's about giving them the best chance to win.

There is nothing to save for either, all the 1sts we have are 2-4 years away from contributing and at that point it's likely the core won't be as good, so even if our 25-32 picks pan out, they're really not slated to be game breakers of the same calibre (AT BEST). At that point the core will be in their mid 30s and generally speaking mid 30s players aren't making runs.
4-1sts and you then need to clear $9 million in cap.
Not a logical target or bounty.

Deadline signings have traditionally always FLOPPED for Toronto, so I say….stay low and run with these guys.

They need to be aggressive at the deadline. Need a middle 6 centre with some jam. And they need a bottom 6 winger with some size and speed. A guy like Brock Nelson would be good for 3rd line center that can move up in the lineup. Matthews is 1st, Tavares is 2nd and Nelson would be 3rd simply because you can't have a 3rd line centre making 11 million. Ideally Tavares would drop down to 3rd and move Nelson to 2nd.

I think the ideal 3rd/4th line left winger would be Pat Maroon. The ideal playoff player with size 6'3 that can chip in occasionally. (very occasionallly) He would be the ideal winger for Tavares.

Tanner Jeannot would also be a great addition. Heavy hitter with size. He's not putting up many points but he is a solid add for a 3rd/4th line player.

If I had my way, I'd pick both Jeannot and Maroon. They will be lost at end of season likely so they could come cheap. Likely get Maroon for a 3rd and Jeannot for a 2nd/3rd rounder.

The most expensive piece would be Nelson but worth it. And, there is a chance he'd sign with the leafs after the season. His hit won't be that much to finish the season and likely take a couple mill less on his next contract. We are set on D and set in goal. Add these pieces and we have a genuine contender that makes it past the 1st round.

The objective is to win this year... THIS year.

Trade all the "never-wases" and "never-will-be's" and get a sure thing. Don't load up on crap like Dubas did every year. The Leafs already have enough of what made my grandfathers barn smell so special.

They need to bring in the best player available regardless of cost.

Everyone acting like they're a tweak away from being a contender. Like a 3C will put them over the top. You gotta be kidding me.

There are sooooo many problems with this team.

A top heavy roster lacking depth. Injury prone unproven goaltending. And a defense with Morgan Rielly and Chris Tanev as top two.

Nothing wrong with the accelerated rebuild here.

They need to target someone, preferably 1RHD, who will be a real difference maker. Just pay the price and take home the prize. Selling the future to win now is a concept as old as hockey itself.

Go big or go home.

Toronto should be all in when it comes to trading picks for rentals, and top prospects for players like Minten, Cowan, Danford with 3 to 4 years left on contracts.

Also a firm believer if you're going to be a buyer at the deadline, to get your targeted player as soon as possible, getting them on deadline day is too late for them to adjust to everything.
Not sure if that is true. Berube's system is much simpler than Keefe's was.

Elite-level speculation long before the trade deadline:

Treliving will keep showcasing Robertson. The goal is to get a 2nd round pick (or close) for him so it can be flipped for a depth C / depth D. The depth C and D will likely come with a contract that expires at the end of the 24-25 season.

Minton, Cowan, Steeves, Hildeby, Rifai, and Akhtyamov are the future.

They should add someone with terms or at the very least being able to afford to extension instead of just straight rentals.

As the team is relatively healthy and got depth esp on D unlike last season where Kling was out while TJ and Gio couldn’t keep up.

Another top 6 winger or C who can PK and win faceoff would be good.

Oftentimes when you bring in front line players it doesn’t work out immediately so anyone they acquire should have term. Especially if they’re giving up prospects and first round picks.

I don't have any attachments to the next couple years draft picks.

They just need to be used to target guys with term that goes beyond this summer (or guys who are willing to extend asap)

I’m all for going all in as long as it’s not some old guy, past his expiration date. We’ve just had way too many old guys come in at the deadline and instantly break or just kind fold.

When your team is 1st in the division and playing very promising playoff type hockey, you have to go all in

Hell the Panthers went all in a couple years before they won, lost three 1st rounders, and still won a cup

If you have a real window with a legitimate chance to win, you'd be foolish not to go for it. But everything depends on the price.

I can't vote yes trade the farm, without knowing the return. Everything should be on the table, if it gives the team a good chance to go all the way.

I don't think you have to go all in. Even if you do go all in, you go from a 5% chance to what? 7%? If there is an obvious player out there that can improve the team, go ahead. But there is no need to go silly. They have a decent chance as it is.
If we didn't go for ROR/Schenn, absolutely no chance we win that Tampa series. We are going to eventually run into Florida, assuming we make a cup run.

Are we ready to beat them in a 7 game series ? I don't know, would adding some legitimate depth help, absolutely. All contenders will add, it'll be a wasted year if we don't go for it.

Panthers had a great chance last year before adding Tarasenko/Okposo, but they were difference makers. Just don't bring in a guy thinking he can be the savior, he needs to add to what we already have. It can't be, come in and carry us. Which is what I felt was the issue with ROR, they brought him in with his cup pedigree and Conn Smythe and needed him to be the guy, when he should have been a great complementary guy.

With all due respect, this discussion was good until the poll arrived. The answers go from reasonable to flat out crazy.

3 x 1st rounders and prospects? They're not trading for Eric Lindros. Who is available at that price during this trade deadline?

When we say 'at the deadline' does that imply a rental?

I wouldn't rent anything more than a Gourde, but if there is term and a long range solution than I'd get aggressive now, at the deadline, or thereafter.

Cowan is the only asset to be careful with as he could perhaps play a role on an elc in the near term, but if the staff thinks that's unlikely he should go as well.
