Just curious on the thoughts of people who watch former 40-goal scorer Jeff “The Justin Bieber of hockey” Skinner more than I do. How’s he doing in Edmonton? Worth 3 mil?

I believe he started alright, but now only has 7g, 8a, -10 in 40 games, with only 12:30 toi. Are they playing him 3rd/4th line and expecting good results?

I’m curious because I’m a fan of the dude, but also can see him exiting the nhl quickly if he ain’t a 2nd liner any more, and that’s kinda seeming to be the case from a numbers perspective.

9th on the team in p/60.
So he definitely is doing something ok with the time he's given.

Oilers fans were telling us he was going to light it up now that he was on a good team and hes... on pace for the third worse season of his career

feels like he came into the year expecting to play the same role as previous years in BUF, 1st line player on a bad team - he was demoted down the lineup and then healthy scratched - he seems to have gotten the message and has been contributing over the last few games, both O & D wise - I hope he keeps it up - we're a better team with him at his best

I've seen iterations of this comment a few times, and it should go with out saying that the caveat was Skinner playing in the top 6. I mean, it was probably expressly stated numerous times at the time of the signing.

Giving that contract to Jeff Skinner was a low risk, high reward type of move by Edmonton

Sadly, it doesn't seems to pay off, but in the worse case scenario, that contract ends up at the end of the year

Here’s the skinny on Skinner:

He started out the year as our most effective offensive forward. Good reviews and production given his initial Top 6 role, I want to say about 5 games this was the case at the very beginning of the year.

The production then stalled and expected defensive warts started showing up in his game.

He was “demoted” by Knoblauch and people thought that was it for him in Edmonton and there would be no way he’d get out of this dog house. Later on, Knoblauch suggested this demotion was for him to work on the details of his game away from the puck and he’s given Skinner good reviews in doing just that.

While in a bottom 6 role he’s been effective. Generating plenty of chances and getting rewarded with production even in 4th line minutes.

That earned him a promotion to getting a look with McDrai in one game. And a promotion to the 3rd line with Henrique and Hyman in the next game.

I would say the plan with Skinner remains the same as it was at the beginning of the year. Hope that he can take off in a top 6 role with one of McDrai and patience for him to learn how to play in a winning environment. I don’t think the experiement has been a success, but I also don’t think the story is over with Skinner in Edmonton. There’s still plenty of time for him to making an impact. Last year we waited like 60 games for Zero Goals Connor Brown to finally find his legs and be part of the solution in Edmonton, culminating in his being a big difference maker in the playoffs and earning an extension in Edmonton. I remain hopeful for a similar story line with Skinner, so I guess we shall see.

40 games, 7G 8A 15P -10. Now he has little offense to match his little defense

On the other hand, former Oiler Ryan McLeod =42 games, 7G 14A 21P +5 on a much worse team

Nice pick up, Edmonton :biglaugh:
