Proposal: Hot Three-Way Action NYI-TBL-MTL

To NYI: Isaac Howard, Michael Hage and Kirby Dach

To MTL: Bo Horvat

To TBL: 17th overall in the 2025 NHL draft

This is a conditional trade on two conditions: Any player with a NTC/NMC has to waive obviously, and Howard has to agree to sign with NYI

Why NYI does it: They get two good young forward prospects to add to the foundation alongside Schaefer this summer

Why TBL does it: asset management and gets their disgruntled player out of the division

Why MTL does it: they get a very good top 6 center
Montreal doesn't want to part with Hage. Pass

Horvat has gone through multiple hoops to get his dream house built on Long Island. He will be down NYI’s middle until he contract is up or at least until the expiring season.

I don't. Gorton and Hughes met with the media yesterday and it sounds like they're still looking more long term than present.

Horvat is a great fit for Montreal in the present, but he's 30. I could see interest, but I doubt they move Hage for him given how much they like him as prospect.

Not really commenting on the trade, because I do not believe NYI will go full rebuild, particularly now that they got very lucky in the lottery. Nor am I commenting on Habs willingness to trade Hage. (I really like Hage!)

But Montreal should absolutely be trying to acquire someone like Horvat. And Horvat, who just turned 30, is an excellent all-around athlete who has been extremely durable. He'd be an excellent fit for the Habs, because of his athleticism and versatility. He's got it where some of their forwards don't (no slight on the Habs forwards - they got it where Horvat doesn't).

He doesn't have a world class first step, but the dude is fast, and I haven't seen him slow down at all. He'll turn 36 right at the end of his contract. I think he'll perform as a higher-end 2nd line C level for another 3 seasons, after which he may slide down the lineup. That's a much better bet than you're likely to get signing UFAs. The Habs window is opening *now*, so a guy who is going to be near the top of his game for next 3 years makes all the sense in the world.

I can't beilieve what I'm seeing here?

A 3 way trade that actually makes sense for all 3 teams on HF Boards, has anyone ever seen this before?

I don't think there's 17 prospects in this year's draft I'd want over Howard, so I'm fine with the proposal as is.

I'm more interested in keeping the 2026 Avs pick over the 2025 17th overall. Colorado is a huge wildcard next year considering the state of their organization.
The Avs are going to be a playoff team next year, although 26 is a deeper high quality player draft but I think you are overstating things here as the Avs are still a top team in the NHL.

I do agree with you, but Horvat (30) also doesn't really
fit into a rebuilding timeline. Hughes and Gorton said as much yesterday.
Habs had miraculous run to make playoffs in their last game -and maybe they're a little ahead of schedule, but they shouldn't be sacrificing too much young C depth for a guy who arguably, won't be a 2C in 3 years.

I'd put Hage in a trade for someone younger - but as I said, I think habs look very bad for doing it - after trading up specifically for him and helping his family realize a dream
Horvat will absolutely be a 2C in 3 years. He’s a low end 1C now and I think his play will age well. Even then you saw what a 34 yr Nelson went for. If I’m being honest, Hage + 17 OVR is probably less valuable then Ritchie + 2026 COL pick but I’m not gonna pick and choose. I don’t view Dach as anything valuable but he can maybe hold down 2C for a year til Ritchie takes it from him.
