I hope the Tulsky/Borg database adds to its core analytics that upper 30's defensemen that come cheap are probably not worth the investment. I would note that Burns year 1 was a star; its the last 2 that have become boat anchors.Sorry for the double post (since I can't edit a quote in a previous post), but it is worth reflecting on how brutal last offseason was for our roster.
I think at some point last season, pretty much all of us accepted that our front office wouldn't extend one of Skjei or Pesce (for a couple of reasons given our FO's history and the age of the players), but I was just thinking early this morning that to lose both was literally unthinkable IMO until it happened (obviously). Personally, I still really wish we had Pesce. However, the notable turnovers wasn't exclusive to the blue line as you pointed out. I think all of us (or close to it) wish we still had Guentzel. Also, yes, Burns' regression is noticeable.
All the more reason why I hope Carolina has a really good offseason this summer with improving the roster given the huge setbacks from last summer. Reasons for optimism: Blake has been a very pleasant surprise, and Nikishin should do well; the question is how soon for him to adjust to the NHL.
I've said this many times but I think Borg has a blind spot in not searching out big defensemen (& of course Goalies that stay healthy). i.e., Toronto's size was a big factor in yesterday's game.
