As a Habs fan i'd keep him.
Great fit with Suzuki and Caufield for next year.

There's a reason Hoffman was a Free Agent so long, and he did absolutely nothing this past season to dispel that stigma. I would think Dallas could probably pry him out of Montreal for one slice of premium Grade A Future Considerations.

Not much. Habs may want to keep him to have a goal scorer, but he was not great last season. His contract is reasonable compared to most UFA signings.

If you offer a 3rd, you immediately get him. If the Habs need the cap space to go after Letang you can prob have him for a 7th.

At this point, Hoffman is severely underrated. He's a complementary winger, can still score around 20 goals and not hurt your team on a 3rd line with a good team. His salary might be a million more than what he deserves but he'll be productive somewhere. Habs won't get rid of him for nothing.

Jamie Benn + Hakanpaa(11 mil)

for

Petry + Hoffman (10.75 mil)

Change of scenery type of deal where both teams get rid of anchor contracts.

MTL gets an aging power winger and an ok RHD.

Dallas gets an aging PMRHD and an inconsistent sniper.

Needless to say that obtaining any 2023 draft pick for Hoffman (without retention) would be optimal to give the Habs some real cap flexibility ahead of the 2023-2024 season. (Unless that cap crunch is solved by Price retiring / LTIRing, a distinct possibility that would obviously be a franchise-altering moment.)

With Drouin’s and Byron’s contract expiring next summer and Caufield being the only noteworthy RFA to re-sign then, the Habs could use that 13.4M to target 1-2 impactful UFA to bolster their lineup, which could prove lethal if they manage to integrate a few prospects on ELCs (top pick 2022; 1st 2023; Guhle; Roy; Barron; Harris; Ylonen, Farrell, Primeau, etc.) within the same window.
