Review: Tron Elite Senior One Piece Composite Stick - Senior, 95 Flex, RH Malki (Sakic) curve
http://www.hockeytron.com/tr158.html
New member to this forum and I wanted to say, "thank you" to the others who have posted unbiased reviews on the house brand stuff found at www.hockeytron.com. I play several rec hockey leagues around the Atlanta area and, because of my size, I tend to go through sticks rather quickly. I used Easton stuff for the longest time but as their quality started to deteriorate I saw myself drifting to Warrior sticks or older two piece Easton sticks (tapered Synthesis/Synergy II) but I'm just not as happy with the feel and performance. I've even gone as far as to repair the blade on my broken Easton Stealth CNT (greatest stick ever built).
Service: First, I need to talk about the service @ Hockey Tron. I ordered over $100 total which means free shipping. HT shipped my order the same day via USPS Priority. What this means is that a package that would normally take 5-7 days from California via UPS only took three days to arrive at my home in Atlanta, Georgia -- a huge benefit of ordering from them. My order was all correct - no erroneous curves or items shipped. I was very pleasantly happy. Service receives a 10/10.
Onto the actual review. I received the stick yesterday and, as advertised, it's VERY light (advertised 418 grams - I can't attest to the exact weight as I don't have a letter scale or anything but it's far lighter than my two warrior sticks that are supposed to weigh 425 and 435, and only slightly heavier than my old Easton Stealth CNT and it's listed at 410g) - I haven't cut it down yet so it's still at full length - about 2" longer than I normally like.
Feel: 10/10 - this stick has a very good contour - similar to the two Warrior sticks I currently use weekly. The corners of the shaft are rounded, not perfectly square (like my Stealth CNT is) and the sides of the shaft seem to have a slightly convex contour. It's got a dull, matte, finish which could help with grip. It's very well balanced - the blade doesn't feel substantially heavier or 'bulky' compared to the rest of the stick when you stick handle with it. The stick, overall, has a very good feel and you can feel the puck easily on the blade.
Construction: 10/10* - this doesn't appear to be a 'true one piece stick' - and I don't believe any of them are. You can see an area where the shaft was fused to the blade but it does have a pretty decent taper which could help with quicker release. The blade is VERY stiff and thin, and its construction reminds me of the Warrior sticks. The curve is very close to a Sakic/Draper curve - I'm pretty pleased. The site says it has a 18k kevlar weave covering - I don't see any reason to believe it's not. Construction receives 10/10 - but this could change as I use it. Easton blades are notorious for pulling apart and getting a 'soggy' (or soft) feeling... only time will tell if this does the same.
Look: 7/10 - This is a good looking stick if you can get passed the somewhat gaudy 'TRON' labels and decals. It's got a matte finish on the classic carbon/kevlar checkered pattern under silver TRON labels and green 'Elite' logos. I've already made the decision that I'll shave the labels and logos off if I decide to pursue ordering more of these. Look receives 7/10 because of the pretty awful decals and logos.
Performance: 9/10 - I just got back from the rink and I'm pleasantly surprised. The stick has an excellent feel and is light when stick handling. I normally cut sticks down about 2 inches but I left this one the standard length and it seemed fine. Wrist shots were solid, slap shots and one timers were excellent and snapshots were solid. The things that saw the most improvement were my back hand sauce, one-time touch passes and regular sauce. The stick is silky smooth and performs very well. The only complaint I had was about an hour into the session I noticed something had come loose inside the stick and was making noise - probably just some glue or maybe some graphite. The blade held stiff throughout the two hour session and I'm very impressed. Never have I seen this type of performance from a 'house brand' stick.
Thanks for taking the time to read this review. I hope it helps.
