This has gotten so ridiculous with the hit posts that I think it deserves its own thread.

Trocheck leads the league in posts hit and 4 players in the top 32 of players.

And I saw a Vince Mercogliano quote about a week ago that said the rangers lead the league in hit posts.

Is it bad puck luck? Are the rangers gripping their sticks so hard that they are aiming for the post because they need a near-perfect shot in order to score? Is it just an anomaly and the rangers will eventually regress back to the mean?

Goalies job is to cut down the angles to stop shots that would go in the net, not to stop shots that would hit the post. Hitting the post means he gave you such little net to shoot at that you missed the net entirely. A hit post is not any closer than hitting the edge of his blocker, glove, etc.
Totally agree….

like in baseball….hitting a ball an inch foul….it’s close, but still a foul.

This is the right thread at the right time at the right place. It's a thread we knew we needed.

Yep. ‘Hitting the post’ is another way of saying ‘missed the net’.

Glad to see some people agreeing. To score goals you gotta hit the net. A shot that hits the post is not counted as a shot on goal for a reason, which is that it's no different than a shot that misses a few inches wide. I never understood the thing where people equate hitting posts with bad luck. It's just a missed shot.

Yep I’d rather hit the goalie than the outer half of the post. At least there’s an opportunity for a squeaker or a rebound.

Except for that half an inch in one direction and it's a goal. It can be indicative that the team is shooting with fairly good accuracy and has just been unlucky.

A great example would be Trouba's shot from the point which almost always misses the net by over a foot in any direction. The reason he has no goals isn't because of bad luck, it's just piss poor accuracy.

Trocheck on the other hand with the league-leading 9 posts shows that he is getting good chances and he's almost buried them with fairly good accuracy in his shot. Just been unlucky.

Well, I would argue it's not "fairly good" accuracy if they're hitting the post that much. Because, again, that's not an accurate shot, it counts no differently than a shot a foot wide.

BUT--I do understand your overall point and I think it's fair. If you have a guy whose shooting percentage is way down and he's hitting a bunch of posts, I can buy that there's an element of luck involved there.

Half an inch in one direction and a shot that hit the edge of the blocker, glove, mask, pad; and its in too though. Also angles accelerate with distance, the shot isn’t actually half an inch from going in because it would actually hit the goalie instead.

As a goalie I’m laughing at this haha. We know we got beat. We know we got lucky. If we want to Chirp a guy this is basically text book. But the truth is it’s a puck that beat you.

Folks are overthinking this. Post shots don't count as shots on net, but they are closer to going in the net than a shot that doesn't hit the post and goes wide. That's it. Portraying a shot that hits the post as some sort of elite master plan by goalies (ah ha got you where I want you, now your confidence is shot, ho ho ho) is being sensational. A shot that hits the post and deflects in BEAT THE GOALIE AND IS GOOD LUCK. We aren't talking about a shot that is 3 feet wide and deflects off a defenders skate and goes in.
Shots that hit the post and deflect out are...Ben Allaire specials? Maybe some, but luck is a big factor there too.

I would rather hear from a goalie who played at high level their thoughts on this anyway.

It’s obviously luck lol players are not accurate to within an inch with their shots
Do the Rangers not have a skills coach to help correct this issue? Why are we still employing Mark Ciaccio who's nothing but a Sather retread that only was hired because Slats wanted to do his old buddy Don Maloney a favor? Guy never played an NHL game in his career and we expect him to teach NHL players how to be skilled? The fish rots from the cigar-smoking head down in this organization.

This is one stat that I never knew existed.

On the other hand shesterkin had a rough game. 3 goals on 18 shots and 2 more posts.

Yuck. Never plays well against the islanders

Trocheck has hit the post 9 times.

Thats is straight up bad luck. No goalie is forcing him to hit the post with positioning or mind games lol.

MOST of this team's posts have been just dumb luck. Zibanejad smoked the post on a 1 T that had Sorokin so beat as clean as the one Panarin scored on earlier. They've had a TON of these this season.
