Officially, the NHL only recognizes shot/save stats going back to 1957. This board, and others around the world, have done a lot of work to research and analyze both official and unofficial data from both before and after the 1957 cutoff. This thread will help preserve and consolidate that work.

I'm going to get it rolling, but feel free to post anything I miss. And please remember this thread as a repository for future research.

As you can see above, HFBoards has historically struggled to preserve data that is formatted in anything other than simple text. If other data is posted here, I strongly recommend posting it in simple text. Same goes for links to other threads, as these have also been broken historically.

Added to the Sources & Resources sticky.

As you can see above, HFBoards has historically struggled to preserve data that is formatted in anything other than simple text. If other data is posted here, I strongly recommend posting it in simple text.
Can't argue with that. I personally still like to use tables, but I've started copying and saving bigger pieces of coded content in Word documents, so that everything can be restored quickly if another worst case scenario came to be.

Same goes for links to other threads, as these have also been broken historically.
Weren't the links broken due to a change in the site name? If that happened again in the future, posting un-formatted links wouldn't help either.

Thanks for adding to the sticky!

At least the un-formatted links give us an idea of what the thread title was. With current HF software, an embedded broken link gives us only a thread ID number which kicks to an error page. Here's an example of how embedding a link into text can leave us with nothing useful to follow.

The only reason I was able to find the 1930-35 threads linked above, was that @BM67 linked them in such a way that the title is still visible. That allowed me to go back and search for the thread title.

1967-2017 EvE Analysis:

I have compiled an error rate vs. expectation report for every individual playoff run from a goaltender who played in 3 or 4 rounds in the post-1967 expansion NHL. Error Rate vs. Expectation (EvE) measures a goaltender's error rate in a playoff round (GA/SA) against an opponent's regular season shooting percentage to determine how much a goaltender allows relative to what the opponent would be expected to score. Rounds are then weighted based upon shots allowed for a cumulative statistic that reads as a percentage, with 100% being what a league average goaltender would be expected to allow.

The ultimate goal is to present a rough ranking for separate categories:

Three-Round Goaltenders
This category is primarily Finalists from 1968-1979, as well as Conference Finalists from 1980-2017. These goaltenders played no other playoff hockey, and their generally smaller sample size may allow for greater fluctuation of their error rate vs. expectation, either positively or negatively. Not represented in this report are goaltenders from the 1976 Philadelphia Flyers, the 1981 Calgary Flames, or the 1987 Montreal Canadiens, as the primary goaltenders on these Conference Finalists did not play in 3 playoff rounds. Included, however, are goaltenders who played in the 1975-1979 preliminary round while making it to the Semifinals.

Four-Round Goaltenders

This category is primarily Finalists from 1980-2017. These goaltenders played in every round, and their generally greater sample size may result in less extremes in their error rate vs. expectation, either positively or negatively. Also included in this category is John Davidson from the 1979 New York Rangers, the only goaltender to play in the 1975-1979 preliminary round and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Rounds 1-3 from Four-Round Goaltenders
This category takes the entire list of Four-Round Goaltenders and isolates the first 3 rounds, removing performance in the Stanley Cup Finals. This presents a comparable sample size to the Three-Round Goaltenders, and because error rate vs. expectation is a measurement that can either increase or decrease with additional play, gives an opportunity for evaluating performance up to an equivalent point without requiring an additional round of statistical maintenance. More than that, for 1983-2017 goaltenders, this captures their performance in the Conference playoffs, which may hold value to some. Also included is Marc-Andre Fleury from the 2017 Pittsburgh Penguins, who did not play in the fourth round.

Rounds 2-4 from Four-Round Goaltenders
This category takes the entire list of Four-Round Goaltenders and isolates the final 3 rounds, removing performance in the Conference Quarterfinals. This presents a comparable sample size to the Three-Round Goaltenders, while emphasizing the error rate vs. expectation for what are arguably the more important rounds. Again, this is presented as a comparable sample size to the Three-Round Goaltenders. Also included is Michael Leighton from the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers, who did not play in the first round.

Limitations include the typical caveats for Save Percentage statistics, including shot counting, variance in shot difficulty, and anchor games (in which a goaltender's statistics in a series are weighed down by 1-2 bad games more than they are bolstered by 4-5 great games). Also the regular season shooting percentage used for the expectation number does not have ENG scoring removed, which would unfortunately require reading 70-82 box scores for every opponent of every goaltender. Not an impossible task, but one that would require the sacrifice hundreds of hours of research and probably my marriage.

Statistics this time were compiled entirely from Hockey-Reference, and there were slight differences in some rounds compared to previous presentations of the error rate vs. expectation statistic.

More on EvE, GvE, and TvE:

The purpose of this section is to provide two lists based on the post-1967 statistical record:

  • The worst scoring playoff teams to win the Stanley Cup (GvE)
  • The playoff teams most reliant on a goaltending to win the Stanley Cup (TvE)

To create these lists, I will be looking at performance vs. expectation. If you're unfamiliar with EvE, GvE, and TvE; here is a brief overview, using the example of the 1996 Eastern Conference Finals:

Error Rate vs. Expectation (EvE)

John Vanbiesbrouck allows 14 goals on 224 shots (14/224=.063) in a playoff series against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that scores 362 goals on 2645 shots (362/2645=.137) in the regular season. John Vanbiesbrouck allows 45.7% (.063/.137) of what a goaltender would be expected to allow against the Pittsburgh Penguins. John Vanbiesbrouck's EvE is 45.7 in this playoff series.

Goals vs. Expectation (GvE)

The Florida Panthers score 20 goals of support against the Pittsburgh Penguins' two goaltenders in this series over the goaltenders' combined 418 minutes (418/60=6.97 games) for a total of 2.87 goals-per-game. The Pittsburgh Penguins' goaltenders allow 275 goals in their combined 4931 minutes (4931/60=82.18) in the regular season for a total of 3.35 goals-allowed-average. The Florida Panthers score 85.8% (2.87/3.35) of what a team would be expected to score against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Florida Panthers' GvE is 85.8 in this playoff series.

Threshold vs. Expectation (TvE)

The Florida Panthers score 20 goals of support against the Pittsburgh Penguins' two goaltenders in this series while allowing 224 shots. In order to break even, the Florida Panthers could allow 20 goals on these 224 shots (20/224=.089) against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that scores 362 goals on 2645 shots (362/2645=.137) in the regular season. The Florida Panthers need to allow only 65.2% (.089/.137) of what a team would be expected to allow against the Pittsburgh Penguins in order to reach the threshold. The Florida Panthers' TvE is 65.2 in this playoff series.

I will only be looking at GvE and TvE in this section. GvE weighted each round by minutes will provide us with the first list: the worst scoring Stanley Cup Champions (performance through four rounds, 1980-2017; performance through three rounds, 1968-1979). TvE weighted each round by shots against will provide us with the second list: the teams most reliant on a goaltending performance to win the Stanley Cup (performance through four rounds, 1980-2017; performance through three rounds, 1968-1979).

Important caveats. While empty net goals are removed from the calculation of playoff goal support, they are not removed from the calculation of regular season shooting percentage. If there comes a point when regular season GF minus ENGs becomes more readily available, I will gladly tweak the calculation to reflect this data. As of now, this would require thumbing through every box score of every regular season game for every team since 1967. Also to the extent that shots allowed is affected by goaltending performance or occurring in the state of New Jersey, I have made no subjective adjustment.

Most important caveat. GvE and TvE look at the series as a whole, rather than a series of individual games in a race for four victories.

Reminder: none of the above charts is a reflection of goaltending performance itself - only the demand placed on the goaltenders relative to goal support and shots allowed (TvE).

The 1970 Boston Bruins placed the least amount of pressure on their goaltending in order to win the Stanley Cup, and all three of their series ranked in the top-10 highest scoring (vs. expectation) series from a post-expansion Stanley Cup Champion.
  • 217.56 - 1972 Boston (vs. St. Louis)
  • 215.40 - 1970 Boston (vs. Chicago)
  • 213.31 - 2008 Detroit (vs. Colorado)
  • 212.60 - 1970 Boston (vs. St. Louis)
  • 193.42 - 1985 Edmonton (vs. Chicago)
  • 191.02 - 1973 Montreal (vs. Chicago)
  • 178.57 - 1983 New York (vs. Boston)
  • 184.64 - 2012 Los Angeles (vs. St. Louis)
  • 178.94 - 1994 New York (vs. New York)
  • 175.97 - 1970 Boston (vs. New York)

The 1986 Montreal Canadiens were easily the worst scoring Stanley Cup Champion of the post-expansion era, but due to their shot prevention and opposition strength, the 1993 Montreal Canadiens still had the more difficult threshold. Two of the 1986 Montreal Canadiens' series ranked in the top-10 least productive (vs. expectation) series from a post-expansion Stanley Cup Champion.

  • 57.49 - 1986 Montreal (vs. Hartford)
  • 65.69 - 1989 Calgary (vs. Chicago)
  • 65.91 - 2009 Pittsburgh (vs. Detroit)
  • 72.24 - 1993 Montreal (vs. Los Angeles)
  • 77.64 - 1997 Detroit (vs. St. Louis)
  • 77.74 - 1986 Montreal (vs. Calgary)
  • 78.48 - 2003 New Jersey (vs. Boston)
  • 78.87 - 1969 Montreal (vs. Boston)
  • 79.35 - 1994 New York (vs. New Jersey)
  • 79.65 - 1987 Edmonton (vs. Detroit)

The 1993 Montreal Canadiens and the 2015 Chicago Blackhawks are the only two Stanley Cup Champions in the post-expansion era to have had a Threshold vs. Expectation (TvE) that necessitated an above-average goaltending performance in all four series.

The 1994 New York Rangers are the only team to have individual series that rank in both the top-10 highest AND lowest scoring (vs. expectation).

The purpose of this next section is to provide two more lists based on the four-round era statistical record:

  • The worst scoring Stanley Cup Finalists through three rounds (GvE)
  • The playoff teams most reliant on a goaltending to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals (TvE)

To create these lists, I will be looking at performance vs. expectation. If you're unfamiliar with EvE, GvE, and TvE; explanations can be found on the above section.

Essentially, GvE looks at Goals Scored vs. Expectation (a percentage of how many goals a team scores vs. what a league average team would be expected to score against the same opponent in the same number of minutes) while TvE looks at Threshold vs. Expectation (a percentage of how many goals a team can allow to have an even goal differential vs. what a league average team would be expected to allow against the same opponent while facing the same number of shots).

I will only be looking at GvE and TvE in this thread. GvE weighted each round by minutes will provide us with the first list: the worst scoring Stanley Cup Finalists (performance through three rounds, 1979-2017). TvE weighted each round by shots against will provide us with the second list: the teams most reliant on a goaltending performance to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals (performance through three rounds, 1979-2017).

Mostest important caveat. Teams aren't actually "carried" to the Stanley Cup Finals. It takes a team effort to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals, though in some cases, teams have been more reliant upon goaltending than others.

Reminder: none of the above charts is a reflection of goaltending performance itself - only the demand placed on the goaltenders relative to goal support and shots allowed (TvE).

The 1995 Detroit Red Wings placed the least amount of pressure on their goaltending in order to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals, in large part due to a Conference Semifinals series in which they scored 24 goals on the San Jose Sharks' goaltenders while allowing just 61 shots. This series ranked as the easiest threshold (vs. expectation) from a post-expansion Stanley Cup Finalist.

  • 351.35 - 1995 Detroit (vs. San Jose)
  • 217.66 - 1994 New York (vs. New York)
  • 202.33 - 1992 Chicago (vs. Edmonton)
  • 196.27 - 1985 Edmonton (vs. Chicago)
  • 191.33 - 1987 Edmonton (vs. Los Angeles)
  • 189.44 - 1981 New York (vs. Toronto)
  • 184.46 - 1981 New York (vs. New York)
  • 183.47 - 2001 New Jersey (vs. Carolina)
  • 173.59 - 2001 Colorado (vs. Vancouver)
  • 169.48 - 1980 New York (vs. Los Angeles)

The 2003 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim faced the most difficult threshold (vs. expectation) of any team on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals in the four-round era, as well as the most difficult single series. The 1996 Florida Panthers and 2002 Carolina Hurricanes had two series each that ranked among the top-10 most difficult thresholds, though in the case of the 2002 Carolina Hurricanes, their victory against the New Jersey Devils saw them win the series in spite of not reaching the threshold, getting outscored 11 goals to 9.

  • 53.07 - 2003 Anaheim (vs. Detroit)
  • 54.49 - 2002 Carolina (vs. New Jersey)
  • 57.30 - 2004 Calgary (vs. Detroit)
  • 58.42 - 1996 Florida (vs. Philadelphia)
  • 59.11 - 1998 Washington (vs. Boston)
  • 59.45 - 2002 Carolina (vs. Toronto)
  • 64.32 - 1993 Montreal (vs. Quebec)
  • 64.45 - 2000 Dallas (vs. Colorado)
  • 65.24 - 1996 Florida (vs. Pittsburgh)
  • 65.26 - 1982 Vancouver (vs. Calgary)

Of the teams that faced the top-10 most difficult thresholds (vs. expectation) on the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, only two went on to win the Stanley Cup: the 1986 Montreal Canadiens and 1993 Montreal Canadiens. For most Cinderella teams, the clock does indeed strike midnight.

Back-to-back Conference Quarterfinals from the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils in 2001 and 2002 provide one of the top-10 easiest thresholds (in New Jersey's favor) and one of the top-10 most difficult thresholds (that Carolina needed to overcome).

The 2003 Stanley Cup Finals saw two of the ten lowest scoring Stanley Cup Finalists (vs. expectation) face each other.

Interesting stuff. Tends to jive reasonably well with my memories, but a few surprises. 2011 Boston being simultaneously strong offensively yet heavily reliant on Thomas is a bit paradoxical. The strange nature of the final series is likely the cause. The Bruins lost two 1-0 games in a series in which they scored 23 goals. From a goaltending perspective, two games were un-winnable. Four were almost un-loseable.

Surprised that 2006 Carolina rates as one of the lower scoring champions. That team had a lot of firepower and never seemed to be struggling for goals. I would guess that Edmonton's artificially bad save percentage rating plays a roll (putrid regular season save% pre-Roloson)...but then again, as luck would have it, they faced Markkanen in the Final anyway.

A couple long OT games can skew things for a team. A win in triple OT is still just one win in a series...but the goaltender is almost getting credit for an additional shutout, but one that is only possible because his team is unable to score themselves. 2015 Chicago leaned on Crawford and Darling in all those long OT games, but ranking as the 4th-most goaltender reliant Cup winner seems to overstate things.

This has tremendous historical value. Thank you for posting all this!

Are there also any SV% data from 1936 till 1952? Do you have these numbers (no matter how incomplete)?

Is 89 now considered the best estimate for Normie Smith's effort? I thought it was 92 (and was hoping Korpisalo would pass him just so that I wouldn't have to be "that guy" when everyone was calling Korpisalo the all-time leader instead of "the leader since shots data was official", which admittedly is a bit wordier).

I've seen 92 as well, but the papers I've looked at have 89-91, 66-67 for the save totals. After further review, I should change it to 90, adding a save in the 5th OT, by majority rules.

Anybody know why Smith’s 90 and not Thompson’s 112 is taken as the record?

Victor Jones, who was the Globe’s correspondent for the Bruins, has the saves from 4/3/33 as 113-96 in favor of the Leafs. He noted 43 regulation saves for Thompson, meaning the Leafs took 71 shots in the 6 OT periods, which doesn’t sound exaggerated.

Looks like @BM67 found a different source that says the save count was 112-93. Either way, those would stand as #1 and #2 all time if we’re accepting unofficial records.

Edit: just found a period-by-period breakdown. Check the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix from April 4th. It accords with Jones’ 43 in regulation, and has 111 saves through 5 OTs. It doesn’t give saves for the 6th OT, so either there were no saves at all or (IMO more likely) they were cut off. We can reconstruct the total if we assume Jones had seen a complete tally which had shots in the 6th OT as 3-2 in Boston’s favor, including the goal that went in.

There are several papers in the Google archives that give a period by period saves record, that leave off the final period (Montreal Gazette, Calgary Daily Herald, Regina Leader Post). The Border City Star is mostly unreadable, but what can be read agrees with the others, with the addition of a final total of 93 for Chabot.

I believe it was a Toronto paper that at the time had a free online archive, but is now pay-walled, that gave me the last period 4 saves for Chabot, but the number for Thompson was unreadable as it was cut off by the edge of the page.

By the sounds of things, those papers were re-printing the box score through syndication. If the final period was cut off by the wire service, then everyone was getting the same incomplete material.

It makes sense that this might have happened for this game in particular. It was nearly 2am when the game ended, and some morning editions missed the result altogether. One can imagine the game ending and an AP/CP reporter rushing to get the result and box score out ASAP in order to get it into as many papers as possible. The minor detail of how many saves happened in the 6th OT wouldn't have been worth the wait, from their perspective.

Is this incomplete box score the reason Normie Smith gets mentioned rather than Tiny Thompson? If so, what a capricious turn of fate for poor Tiny. He'd have been better off letting in a goal late in the 4th OT than posting another 30 minutes of shutout.

Ugh, how frustrating is that??
