Highest pick used on a goon?

Those interested ought to look at the 1983 draft, arguably the best ever for tough guys.Probert was the 46th pick.

Goon is a type of player who regularly intimidates players of an opposite team, no matter if those opponents are "pure skill players" or tough guys. Goon threats primarly with pummelings, suckerpunches, slashings, kneeings etc. type of real hockey violence.

There are very few, if any, pure goons at NHL level. Most fighters are just enforcers fighting with other enforcers. A rather pointless actually. There may be more occassional "goon acts" from aggressive players(including enfocers themselves) resulting spontaneous retaliation fighting, but Dave Schultz type of players are pretty much history. Actually even some pest players(U.Samuelsson,B.Marchment) were closer to goons than some fighters/enforcers.

Tie Domi 27th overall in 1988.
3515 career PIM's.

We may have a winner. While Domi isnt as bad of a player as some have suggested (he could outskate Sundin in the Leafs skills comp) he still was never going to be confused with Mike Bossy. Enforcer might be a better word for him though

1979 was the deepest draft ever. The first round alone had 11 players who went on to play over 1000 games. Who did the Winnipeg Jets draft? Jimmy Mann, whose NHL career consisted of 30 points and 895 PMs in 293 games. It was somewhat prophetic of the luck Winnipeg would have in the NHL.

:)

what he said

i don't remember. were nazarov or dingman considered future contributors when they were taken in the first round? 'cos they sure turned out to be goons.

Pretty much describes Behn Wilson.

Scott Parker was taken 20th overall in 1998. He was considered a budding power forward, until teams realized he had hands of concrete and couldn't skate.
He is exactly who I thought of: he was a goon and everyone knew it. I was in Kamloops and saw plenty of games against Kelowna. Anybody who thought he was a budding power forward didn't see how he scored in major junior hockey.

Everybody I know KNEW Parker was a first round dud, a 4th or 5th rounder at best. But us Blazers fans were just happy that the Avs used their first of two 1st rounders that draft on Robyn Regehr.

I do recall scouting reports on both that mooted an untapped power forward laying within, particularly on Nazarov.

Remembering of course this was in the day and age where scouts and by extension NHL organisations placed an unreasonably high premium on size and size alone.

Tiger Williams was 31st overall, though he was a bit more talented than a pure goon.

You just don't see number like that anymore.

The only guy taken before him in that draft that played more NHL games was Trottier. Other guys like Mark Howe also played in the WHA and some guys played only a few less.

Scott Parker, 20th Overall. The Avs had four first rounders, and knew they wouldn't be able to afford paying all three "first round money". They knew Tanguay, Skoula and Regehr would demand as much, so they decided to fill a need and meet their budget by drafting Parker.

Thats a stupid mentality, they should have traded the pick IMO and drafted Parker later in the draft
