NYLANDER HITS THE HIGHWAY
:wings / :flames
USATSI_10418375-1024x735.jpg

After plenty of speculation and plenty of waiting, Calgary Flames GM @Black Noise has finally dealt Swedish winger William Nylander to the Detroit Red Wings for a package of draft picks and young players. Nylander has clearly voiced that he wasn't interested in playing with the Calgary Flames middling squad and was finally dealt to the Wings, a team with clear direction and a young core. Nylander's apparent discontent for Calgary was reportedly sparked by feisty teammate Ryan Reaves who allegedly called Nylander a slimy Swedish soft {redacted}. Fellow Swede who happens to be the GM of the Red Wings, @Weylspin has shown constant interest in Nylander and kicked tires through the whole process, eventually giving up a decent package to get his hands on Nylander which including former 4th overall pick Jesse Puljujarvi and promising defenseman Dante Fabbro. Puljujarvi has had recent struggles trying to cement his position in the NHL which may have possibly triggered the decision to include him. Fabbro is a two way defenseman from Boston University who's produced at a pace exceeding the point per game threshold. Fabbro may be close to being NHL ready and could be ready for play as early is March in this year. The final piece sent to Calgary was a Top 3 protected 2019 first round pick, being from the New York Rangers. Calgary also sent Finnish forward Valtteri Filppula to Detroit in the trade. Calgary looks to be rebuilding or retooling their team in a way where they're acquiring picks for the 2019 draft but would like to compete for the 2020 season, while Detroit has a multitude of picks and can try for a playoff spot and still get some good returns on draft picks.

To CGY: 2019 NYR 1st (turns to 2019 FLA 1st + 2019 PIT 2nd if 2019 NYR 1st is Top 3), Dante Fabbro and Jesse Puljujarvi
To DET: William Nylander and Valtteri Filppula

:edmonton resign Juuse Saros to 2 year deal @ $2.75 M AAV

Juuse Saros has signed an extension with the Edmonton Oilers today, garnering a $5.5 Million contract over 2 years. Saros, 23, is a bright star in the Oilers organization, currently supplying them with 5 wins, including 1 shutout. Though it was hoped he would take over the starting job soon, that still may be a year or two away. Saros has a .903 Save % this season, coupled with a 2.94 GAA in 10 games.

The Arizona Coyotes finished contracts with 2 key members of their future core in Bo Horvat and Kevin Fiala. Horvat, 23, is having a breakout year with 21 points and 11 goals in his first 25 games this season, while also being known off the ice in the Coyotes locker room as a leader. His contract includes a Modified No-Trade Clause, where starting in 2022/2023, Horvat may list 10 teams he is not willing to be dealt to. Fiala, 22, has had struggles to start the year, seeing a decrease in his time on ice and point production, with 10 points in 23 games. An offensive threat, Fiala finished the 2017/2018 season with 23 goals and 48 points.

November Power Ranking

A big thanks to everyone who made a submission for November's HFVHL Power Ranking! I was a bit skeptical at first with continuing on with the Power Ranking but I'm glad interest picked-up near the last couple days. Moving forward, I plan to continue on with the monthly updates and allow GMs to start submitting new rankings about a week before the end of the month.

In our November ranking, we see a number of big changes throughout. Our league leading Florida Panthers (#4), led by GM @ATypicalCanadian, jumped up 12 spots into the #4 spot. GM @Wush's St Louis Blues (#1) claim the top spot in November's Power Ranking after a hot start to the season. The Los Angles Kings (#2) and Carolina Hurricanes (#3) jump into the top 3, while the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Vancouver Canucks (#5), slip 3 spots to #5.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (#6), the Boston Bruins (#8), and the New York Islanders (#9) haven't quite lived up to expectations, resulting in all three teams to drop in this month's power ranking. The Arizona Coyotes are the only team to not change in ranking as they stand-pat at #7. The Winnipeg Jets (#10) just beat out the Philadelphia Flyers (#11) for final spot in the top 10. And a big congratulations to both GM @Black Noise and GM @HankNDank as the Calgary Flames (#12) and New Jersey Devils (#13) went from being unranked to contending teams. The Ottawa Senators (#14), the Anaheim Ducks (#15), and the Pittsburgh Penguins (#16) round out the top 16 teams despite falling a few spots from the off-season power rankings.

As we've expanded our HFVHL power ranking to the top 20 teams in the league, a warm welcome to the San Jose Sharks (#17) and the Edmonton Oilers (#20) on making the cut. Both have shown great potential and I look forward to seeing if they can climb up the ranks. Our biggest fallers of the November power ranking, the Buffalo Sabres (#18) and the Washington Capitals (#19), round out the top 20 dropping 8 and 10 spots respectfully. Look for both teams to bounce back soon and jump back up a few spots.

Thanks again for everyone who submitted a ranking. Looking forward to the next one!

Dropped Out: N/A (everyone from the off-season power ranking stayed in the top 20 of November's Ranking)

Just Missed: New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings

It's that time of the season again. Time to update the power rankings.

I'm looking for all (as many as possible) GMs top 20 list for the November 2018 Power Ranking. Please send via PM here or on discord. Deadline is the end of the month.
