Lotr reference. The shire is for hobbits which are small and tiny. And everything in it is tiny. So be to be huge in the shire is fanatically clever pun. Because is he huge height wise? Or popular? Or both!

It’s a pun for the ages.
But is the reference to Hughes? Because it’s not really a pun for the ages if the word and the name aren’t even spelt the same or don’t even sound the same.

Where are you getting Hughes from?

"Huge" and "Hughes" rhyme. The soft G in "huge" is perhaps vaguely similar to the voiced S in "Hughes." It's a slight stretch, but maybe it's that.

VeryKniesILike is a pretty good one

My understanding is that there’s no hockey pun involved
There is no hockey reference at all, I considered Hughes in the Shire but decided to do it clean instead.
It is just a reference to LotR about the fact that I'm short, but I'd be Huge in the Shire.

Then I went a step further with the You may not like me but, I'm Huge in the Shire quote
