It’s not needed. NHL teams care and battle for the 8th seed. This week has been exciting already.

In the NBA, too many teams were tanking and didn’t care about the 8th seed (cause that upset rarely happens)

At the end of the year you could face a team that has clinched and fields less than stellar lineups

I mean if the Wild lost, Flames had advantage of playing teams who will sit 3 or 4 of their top guys

They still could blow it but point still stands.

But each season is different, so the above is not always the case. And I just don't think there is a great way around it, but makes for fun discussions

Yea, but what if WC1 and 2 cleared the 9th and 10th placed teams by 6+ pts.

Is it fair to make them play do or die games to keep their seeds?

The NBA did it as an anti-tanking measure (you keep your draft spot even if you win the 7 or 8 seed), not necessarily to add excitement (even tho it does).
