Yes, he was drafted knowing that he was viewed as a high end talent that was going to take time to develop to eventually supplant Kopitar. Having him spend time alongside Kopitar for a season plus benefited him.
No guarantee it will work out, at the draft, that Byfield will develop into a player who will push aside the HHOFer. But unlike the Rangers the Kings picked the right guy for succession.

Dominant period from the kings wasters by conceding a least equalizer

Sure everyone gets excited when a hockey players scores with one hand. But I do it playing soccer and suddenly I'm "Cheating" :sarcasm:

Is Byfield the player worth drafting high and patiently waiting for to develop? Kopitar is getting old. Byfield is sure looking like he’s the young player to push Kopitar out the door. This is exactly what the Rangers missed in their drafts. No young guys to push out the older players.
Coaches will always play their best guys (coaches want to win). They will only play their best guys young guys ahead of the older players if it means a better chance of winning. Byfield looks like a guy the LA coach will be playing ahead of Kopitar. A natural progression to the younger (better) player. Rangers don’t have that.
Coaches do not always play their best guys. Gallant for example never gave the young guys key minutes or PP time. M0ost coaches will go with vets even if they are crap.

...nice to see the Kings admitting that goal should have been disallowed and Byfield should have gone to the box for 2 minutes or less...

You don't tend to get called for pulling a stick away from your midsection. Tale old as time.
