Rangers had a really good opportunity to build a dynasty. They had elite experienced core players while having several years of drafting top ten. Was it four missed high firsts in a row? They hit on even half and it’s a totally different situation for them.
They picked the consensus players in Lafreniere and Kakko. IMO the biggest mistake was letting Gallant coach the team. He screwed up all the young guys because he refused to give them good minutes. They needed a coach who could/would work the young guys into the lineup.

The fact is the Rangers had several top tens in a row and missed on all of them. Just because the S calls experts say a guy should go in a certain spot doesn’t mean that’s correct. It’s up to the GM to make the best selection in those high slots. And obviously the Rangers’ GM (don’t know who it was tbh) missed on all of them. That’s bad.

What a goal by Byfield.
Is Byfield the player worth drafting high and patiently waiting for to develop? Kopitar is getting old. Byfield is sure looking like he’s the young player to push Kopitar out the door. This is exactly what the Rangers missed in their drafts. No young guys to push out the older players.
Coaches will always play their best guys (coaches want to win). They will only play their best guys young guys ahead of the older players if it means a better chance of winning. Byfield looks like a guy the LA coach will be playing ahead of Kopitar. A natural progression to the younger (better) player. Rangers don’t have that.

Yes, he was drafted knowing that he was viewed as a high end talent that was going to take time to develop to eventually supplant Kopitar. Having him spend time alongside Kopitar for a season plus benefited him.
