Oilers probably would’ve had to massively beat the Caps offer to get him from division rival Vegas, though.

I mean, they had lots of options for goalies. Stolarz and Brossoit were available as UFA's. Boston was looking to trade Ullmark.

It wasn't Logan Thompson or bust. They prioritized signing Jeff Skinner though to give Stuart a jersey buddy.

Certainly they could have, but you said they could’ve had Thompson....

Can probably lay some "blame" to the Oilers having to manage a new GM on top of the Broberg/Holloway fiasco, as well. Or sometimes teams just don't want to make trades with certain teams because they figure the road might run through them and why give them any more ammo unless it greatly improves your own chances.

The Broberg/Holloway fiasco happened way after free agency. Happened nearly 2 months later. The Oilers having to manage a new GM didn't stop them from signing Arvidsson/Skinner.

Those guys are having good seasons but neither of them have ever been a starter in their career, nor do I think you can really lean on them to be. They've never played with that kind of workload. They'd have both been a massive upgrade on Pickard though.

They didn't have to be a starter. They just needed someone to split games with Stuart Skinner. You're not getting a bonafide #1 goalie through UFA/trade usually.

Skinner gets pulled every playoffs and you're relying on Pickard (again) to save the season if that happens again.
