I did that in 33 hrs in a semi last week. Had to get a drop off in Regina Thursday otherwise is sit all weekend, including ny birthday Sunday. What an insane trip.

That was tough enough in a car - can't imagine doing that trip in a semi!

Through Canada, or the States?

I love Europe for travel, for this very reason.

Did a road trip from Toronto to Winnipeg one time - only took a day. Of course, it was 24hrs non-stop, but... ;)

Fiancee and I are road-tripping to my parent's place in Calgary in the summer. She falls asleep too easily in cars to drive that far so I'll be doing the bulk of it. We want to leave in the early morning and get there that night so I'll probably be pumped full of coffee and energy drinks.

I'll need to figure out a method of staying awake through Saskatchewan.

Any time I've driven in that direction through Saskatchewan, I usually time it so I drive across in the middle of the night. Nothing much to see from the highway anyway. ;)

Through Canada. Too much of a pain putting stuff in transit through the states, plus you can drive 13 hrs vs 11.

If anyone drives through Ontario, 11 is flat and boring, 17 is hilly as all hell and a fun drive in a car, but don't do it in the winter due to squalls off the lake.

Ooo good call. I'm still not finished the first Game of Thrones book so I could grab a few of those.

Yeah, I listened to the second one on my trip, and then went on to 'Carrie' and about a fourth of the fourth Harry Potter book. I really enjoy driving, but with audio books, you won't have to deal with the annoyance of bad radio signal, commercials or bad songs on all radio channels.

I have done that trip literally 100's of times over the past 30+ years. I'd get up at 3:30 AM, bundle the wife and kid(s) into the car and be on the road by 4 AM. Stop in Virden, or Moosomin for gas, then stop in Regina, usually by 11:00 AM for gas and a change of driver (my wife would normally sleep 'til at least the first stop for gas!) catch a couple of hours of sleep and then gas up and change drivers again in Swift Current, then stop in Medicine Hat for gas, Brooks for gas, and then we usually made Calgary between 4 and 5 PM local time. In the winter all bets are off for time, though. It's taken us as long as 24 hours, and once as short as 10.5 hours (the Mrs. doing 150 through Saskatchewan in our Buick Park Avenue!). In decent weather we usually allow 13.5 to 15 hours for the Winnipeg-Calgary trips.

I don't normally have a problem staying awake, and since the advent of the IPod, if I needed to, I would put the earbuds in and drive with my own soundtrack.

We've driven through to Vancouver many times, but that's almost always two days, unless I was soloing, which became a 27 hour junket. I did come back from Vancouver solo one time in slightly less than 24 hours, but that would be the anomaly.

I've done this trip about 15 times. My record is 19 hours. I go around Chicago and cross the border at Sarnia. Last trip I couldn't make it straight through. Crashed at a rest stop for 5 hours.

Yeah, I prefer the US route - the 24hr non-stop was through Canada. 19hrs through the States is very good time.

My buddies and I did Miami to Saskatoon non stop (4300 K) when we were all 19. A few weeks later I drove from Saskatoon to Winnipeg and it felt like a trip to the local grocery store for Milk.

I really miss the driving road trips with buddies in the summer. That was an annual fixture for about 7 years and are some of the more memorable times in my life. funny looking back when I was a little kid we always did the family road trips and if I had a dollar for every person who has said those were there best family memories.. I grew up in a different era when flying with families was unaffordable so you drove or you didn't go.

I never did the massive road trip with friends. The best I did was a buddy and I went from Brandon to Edmonton to visit friends for a week. I'd love to go out to the east coast or even to the lower mainland BC.

The summer we graduated my buddies and I took an old Ford Aerostar from Victoria to LA... without rest.

Once we got to San Fran we started to notice problems but we got to LA. Few days later we were driving to our motel and the van just stopped working.

This is where the story gets good:
We had the van towed to a garage. The whole engine block cracked from overheating as the dial stopped working at the same time the coolant started leaking (IIRC). The cost to fix it was far more than the vans value.
We basically spent our money to go here and so we had to sell Disney land tickets to pay for a way home. When we were scalping outside I saw my buddy pushed some old guy and I thought "oh god we're going to LA jail". It turned out it was the director of a summer camp we all used to volunteer at.
We were 2 hours from when our train was leaving and still couldnt' figure out what to do with the car. We found one garage that would take it as scrap, but it wasn't the garage the car was at as they wanted nothing to do with it since none of us actually legally owned the car (it was my buddies dad's). We had to leave the owner's son there as we took a taxi rushing to the train station as he tried to figure things out. He ended up making it 20 mins before the train left.
We had a trip that was straight out of planes trains and automobiles as it took 3 trains, 2 buses... with one train breaking down half way as well and another stopping because a guy died of a heart attack.

That was one weird trip.

Also, two of my friends had a fall out on the trip and have not spoken to each other since...

Wow that is an epic trip story....honestly one of the best I have heard!

On top of that you may be the only person I know that ever caught a train in California (not kidding)

Also why did your buddy shove the director from the camp?

Great story garret

I LOVE roadtripping (as I am sure I have mentioned MANY times here ) In the past 5 years I have driven Winnipeg to LA twice (once down to Chicago and along Route 66, once to Seattle and down the coast), twice to Florida (once to Kissimmee, once right down to Miami for a cruise) and a big Eastern seaboard trip that took me through Nashville, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington and New York).

Over 30K and loved every second. I can't wait for Europe, I will be a sightseeing beast. Only thing is you want to go for like 2 months so you can really see some stuff.

Getting discretionary assistance from the government for school is such a pain in the ass now. Especially when I can't hook up either printer in my house to my laptop which means I have to either use my parents ancient laptop that's slow as molasses and won't open up links anymore or go to my moms work to print.

I watched the first 8 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine after it was talked about here yesterday. Pretty good actually. Nothing special but it's doing a good job.

My dad was the last guy to get high speed Internet. Up until a few years ago he had Dial up and it was beyond torture to navigate. He has been hooked on high speed for a while now thank god.

They have unlimited data from MTS on their phones, so they basically use their phones for everything. I am still cursing myself for not realizing the laptop I purchased didn't have a disc drive.

An old girlfriend of my sold me on Europe travel when I was 29 I took a leave of absence and spent 5 months Europe backpcking. You don't need to take that long but I spent all of August and September in Greece and it was one of the best times of my life.

Technology is amazing up to the moment it doesn't work properly then it is a curse tht brings the worst out of me.

I don't understand why a computer would be made without a disc drive at all. People still play computer games! Those have discs. Should have waited to buy one after Christmas, but oh well.

And when I phoned Acer they couldn't tell me where to get their external disc drive.

I know that feeling. I'm completely lost in times I have no internet (except on vacations or holidays). It's a weird and sometimes frightening thing to realize but then again, I'm sure a lot of people growing up with a big technological intervention felt like it over the history of mankind.

This is less and less "true". Pretty much every game nowadays is available as a digital purchase, too. From a technological point of view, disks are outdated and tie your hands as a developer in multiple ways. There even already were rumours around the new console generation having no physical data carrier anymore.
