Indeed there was a reason for the line. And that reason was not to use slow motion high definition cameras to determine if a play is two millimetres offside or not an indeterminate amount of time after a goal was scored, possibly well after the supposed offside in question has had any meaningful effect on the actions that directly led to the goal. When the line and the spirit behind its purpose was put in place the technology and camera quality needed to determine this microscopic ridiculousness did not yet even exist.
