Team Canada bounced back from a tournament-opening loss to the USA to defeat Denmark 6-1 on Day 3 of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship. The win keeps Canada in the thick of things in Group A, a group currently led by undefeated Sweden.

As in the first game of this tournament, Canada gave up the opening goal. This time around, though, they scored the next six and never let the Danes back into the game.… read more

Few if any teams at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship can ice the depth of talent that Team Canada normally brings to this tournament. This year’s team features a mix of player styles perhaps better suited for the larger ice surfaces in Helsinki, Finland, but Canada has brought along their usual complement of high-end offensive talent.

One of those high-octane players is forward Mitch Marner, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect who currently plays for the London Knights of the OHL.… read more

Team Sweden remained undefeated at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship after eking out a 1-0 win over the USA in a Group A battle at the Helsinki Ice Hall in Finland.

Sweden needed just one goal to gain the victory, a goal scored by Alexander Nylander (2016) early in the second period of a tight, penalty-filled contest. But in reality, the Swedes needed goaltender Linus Soderstrom (NYI) to shut the door on Team USA as the Americans controlled play throughout much of the game, outshooting Sweden 46-23 on the day.… read more

The talented collection of forwards and defensemen that Team Sweden brought to the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship overshadowed the goaltenders on that country’s WJC roster, but it was goaltender Linus Soderstrom that won the day in Sweden’s 1-0 win over the USA on Day 3 in Helsinki, Finland.

Soderstrom, a prospect of the New York Islanders, earned the shutout with full marks, stopping all 46 shots that Team USA fired his way.… read more

Team Russia has been nearly perfect at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, with the only “blemish†being a shootout win over the Czech Republic on the opening day of the tournament. They continued their roll through the preliminary round on Day 4 of this WJC, defeating Belarus 4-1 at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland.

The Russians rode a three-goal first period blitz until the third period when they added a fourth a little over a minute after Belarus had made it a 3-1 game.… read more

After splitting their first two games of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, Team Canada was given a good scare by Switzerland on Day 4 of the tournament, with the Swiss taking Canada to a shootout before captain Brayden Point (TBL) and Mathew Barzal (NYI) netted shootout markers to give Canada the win.

Switzerland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Canada halved the lead on a late goal by Dylan Strome to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Swiss leading, 2-1.… read more

With host Finland on the docket for a New Year’s Eve showdown, Team Czech Republic could ill afford to lose to a lesser team like Belarus if they wanted to stay ahead of their Group B counterpart while also maintaining a chance to win the group outright.

Perhaps there was no other outcome for Team Belarus at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, that outcome being a date with Switzerland in the relegation round of this tournament. The Belarusians haven’t played badly at this WJC, but nevertheless find themselves fighting to avoid a return to Division 1A at the U20 level.

The host country for the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, Team Finland, received an early scare from Slovakia before taking control of a game that ended with an 8-3 win for the Finns at Hartwall Arena, in Helsinki, Finland.
