Hi friends.

Long time no see. Sorta veered away from spending my nights watching hockey years ago, and Sabres being stuck in perennial mediocrity didn't help.
(and it all started when Regier didn't re-sign Briere at 5x5, just FYI)
Plus my home town had a team in the KHL for 3 years, that was fun, before they went bankrupt.
Andy (D)Elmore played here, Steve Montador, Jonathan Cheechoo, etc.

Anyway, I feel for you guys (nice to see so many names I still remember from like 10 years ago), I'm sorry you're going through this, sucks.

Also, while I still follow hockey on the side, I'm still way too much into soccer, less into basketball, was never into (american) football. Watched Quarterback on Netflix. Thought to myself, looks cool.
Started watching it. Since all the Sabres stuff before, went with rooting for the Bills. I started caring. Got crushed.

Felt... Very Sabre-like. Felt home lol.

Anyway... Love from Croatia <3

The most infuriating thing in the world is that franchise values keep rising no matter what. This mess is valued at 900 million dollars. He bought it for 189 and missed the playoffs for 13 straight years while neglecting the roster, staff, arena and fan experience.

Meanwhile he cries about lost profits and strips it bare.

That aint happening. With 4 potential expansion fees in the wind, he could spend to the cap floor for the next 5 years and still be way ahead. He covered the acquisition cost with the VGK and Sea fees. TPegs has his guy in KA and things look good from the poop deck on the yacht.

Whoa! Whoa! Overreaction much? Didn't you see how they played against the bottom feeders (some of which who were insanely hurt) to start the 2024? That was going to be the turning point of the season!

On the real, now the schedule is toughening up a bit, and theyre reverting back to being crapm

There are two conflicting reports within just a couple of weeks of each other (Sept/Oct 2023)

The Buffalo News says the KBC Lease ends in 2025.

Channel 4 says that it ends in 2027.

Either way I think the Sabres are prepped to sell. My tinfoil hat says that if the Bills win a Super Bowl Pegula will sell the Sabres while everybody is celebrating. He likely has a 2-3 window after hoisting the Lombardi before the masses would care.

Looking at the FB and IG comments, most of the casual fans are still yapping about "patience" and "Adams has a vision and he is sticking to it."Those people wouldn't even notice the team was gone until they knocked KBC down.

This post pretty much sums up my recent mounting feelings. Today's loss to the Blues may have been the final nail in the coffin, and I can now identify with Ryan O'Reilly's infamous locker room quote. I've considered myself to be a die-hard fan since October 1997 (at the age of 16)...shortly after the disappearance of the Hartford Whalers. Frankly I've been drawing too many negative parallels of late. I was just old enough to know what a shitty ownership group is capable of doing, ie buy a team and get out of town! So I always say be careful what you wish for - the Sabres could end up in Houston or Kansas City some day. It makes me so sad now that when I drive 6 hours out to Buffalo from Connecticut the Sabres are way in the back of my mind. I've been going back mostly for the curling of late, the general love of the city, and constantly taking in a new place or experience to check out - a week ago, it was staying at the Richardson asylum and grabbing food at Bar Bill's! It's too bad I feel as though I've outgrown the simple pleasures of a Loganberry, but I still treasure your pizza and beef on weck, just to name a short sample of delicious goodness. Buffalo is like my second home I've never had now (hell, I even got a haircut and a beard trim when I was just there in Elmwood Village), having made 20 trips yonder, and will very likely return again soon for the Eclipse! If the Sabres are playing around that time, I just might see them, but it's certainly NOT the thing I look forward to doing like I used to. It's very very sad. I almost feel the need to be a front runner now and like some ultra good European soccer team to make up a little for the many years of sucky hockey and injury-riddled, poor luck, and bad decision-making NFL football. I just am not sure I could do another straight year of Buffalo sports team stuff right now. And it's morbidly reassuring in knowing I'm not alone in this. One day I'll awake from this nightmare and be able to see a team that can make me smile, putting in the effort to make a deep run into the playoffs. But I feel that day is going to be another decade+ away at this point, if ever. Side note: the loss of RJ didn't help matters either, even if he had no barring of actual effect to what was being done on the actual ice. Ugh.

I think if the team is sold it's as good as gone too which maybe was the point of keeping the team as bad as it's been all along (makes the team easier to move because the fans don't give a shit). It's crazy how they took one of the most passionate and arguably the best US market (per capita) and beat us into submission.

Let me start by saying that if this team is sold I can't believe it sticks around in Buffalo. With a $900M valuation you would struggle to get a return in this town with the current set up of the team. But I also think Buffalo is a viable and important hockey market for the NHL and the league wants a team here. I think it is complicated.

That said, if Pegula sells and the Sabres leave it will only be because of his own failure. He will have destroyed and torn down the 4th most winning franchise in league history into a pile or rubble nobody wanted anymore. He could have prevented it by hiring real hockey people and staying the fork out of the way. But he couldn't help himself. It will 100% be his fault if this city loses an NHL team.

The Sabres aren’t going anywhere for the 19th time Pegula just agreed to renovate the building we are literally getting a new scoreboard for 24-25. It’s confirmed

A lot of "industry experts" have been quoted saying that upgrading KBC could cost $150M+. But Roth mentioned that the heaviest investment they will make in the arena is the scoreboard, and it won't be like any of the behemoths recently installed around the league.

I think it is important to distinguish Pegula's spend of replacement vs. upgrade.

For reference, the Sabres scoreboard was redone in 2007 by Daktronics. They have been starting to see failure in boards around the 14 year mark and KBC is at year 16. This is likely less of an "upgrade" and more of a "replacement". (source, I sell the dvLED walls)

The new San Jose one cost $5M. I think Pegula likely spends between $2-3M on this. Probably a similar size, but 2x or 3x the 2.5mm pixel pitch the sharks have. The current set up is 10mm. 5mm would be a huge upgrade, then reduce the cost based on San Fran vs. Buffalo.

There hasn't been a single upgrade to the arena other than the locker rooms since Pegula bought the team. Or since it was built for that matter. Originally Pegula asked the state/county to cover it and they said no.

I am unsure how much of this is "Pegula upgrading" vs "general maintenance".
