Here and Now: The Preseason

Lizotte could be a full timer right now but they'll manage the roster according to waiver eligibility. A team like the Kings cannot lose any potential trade chip aka vets for nothing. Lizotte will still get some games this season.

Ahhhh... visions of Jason Labarbera!

Good Times indeed...

Who were the veterans that Doughty, Clifford, Simmonds, and Moller pushed out? You can say Visnovsky was traded after they found out they were picking #2 and knew they were getting Doughty, but they still did get Greene, so you could say he took Visnovsky's spot if you wanted. Cammalleri was traded, but that was at the 08 draft, not the 08 training camp. The only move DL made around training camp that year was getting ODonnell. Calder was still on that team. Armstrong was still on that team. Clifford didn't push any veteran out in the 2010 training camp. No old guys ended up in Manchester. No trades in Sept/Oct.

It's not about paying dues. It's contract realities.

Lombardi wasn't as gung ho about it when he first started, but he was adamant about paying your dues as time went on. He continued to pick up vets even when young guys were probably ready. The last time the DL Kings had a guy go straight to the NHL was Clifford in 2009. No one for the last 8 years. Some of that was obviously success and contracts, but he stuck to his guns when the wheels fell off. There were signings like Setoguchi, and Purcell up front, Folin and Gilbert in the back instead of giving what youth we had a shot.

3 of the 4 ended up in Ontario and/or traded that year. Folin was Blake. Those guys were the same roster filler that DL signed in 2006 and 2007, or the Blake got this summer. Who were the young guys that were ready after the 15-16 season? Dowd and Shore both played 70 games in 16-17. Forbort's first full NHL year. Gravel was here for the majority of that season. LaDue got some time. Brodzinski got a couple games. Most of them aren't good though. The more they played, the more they were exposed as just not good enough. The biggest problem back then was that they didn't have any young guys worth making spots for. How many guys from the 16-17 Reign are in the league, with the Kings or otherwise, even a couple years later?

Teams make their moves well before camp. Maybe a minor transaction here or there as Oct rolls around, but pretty much every team has their roster decided before Sept. The Kings must know what they have in Clifford and Lewis by now. They've been here forever. If they weren't traded between the end of last year and now, then unless McDavid is knocking on the door, guys like that will start the season on the team, in the normal slots in the lineup that they've occupied for a decade. One impressive camp by an average prospect isn't going to change that. We want that to change, as quickly as possible, but there are financial realities. Carter and Toffoli aren't going anywhere yet either.

This is not a pure free market capitalism, where a ruthless meritocracy essentially makes your decisions for you. Can't just cut guys that can't keep up. There are sunk costs that have to be accounted for. It's why no team is eager to rebuild, unless they're forced by circumstance. There's no stripping things down to the bone. Even Ottawa has a couple veterans, who will actually play games this year, they had to waste money on. Teams must use a certain amount of the cap. A lot of roadblocks that you can't get around quickly. It takes time. Kind of have to wait your turn. That's the downside of the cap.

Game is on Fox Sports West in case you hooligans didn't know.

Some weird black spot in the center of the frame (disappears during commercials). Thought I had a huge cluster of dead pixels on the 4K tube.
