The question is... What would you give him? remember.. the "luongo rule" would also apply to him as well

Lundqvist deserves every penny he'll get, but one has to wonder in the landscape of the NHL cap world, whats best for the team and if Henrik is taking that into consideration. I would not begrudge the guy for getting everything he can, but i wouldnt be surprised if he is fair and leaves the Rangers with some wiggle room to sign an extra depth player or have enough to keep the right guys in front of him.

That would be a huge stand-up, classy move, one that the Rangers should never forget if he does, and more importantly if they find a way to win. But that remains to be seen. I think Henrik is such a competitor and wants to win so badly, this has to enter into his mind. I dont want the Rangers to insult him, but I'm hoping he wont get a Malkin type cap-killing deal either.

We'll see what happens I guess.

Hasn't happened yet. At every contract opportunity for Lundqvist to date, he has received top dollar (and delivered).

Despite goalies playing the most minutes, they still haven't achieved true franchise salary as of yet. I would be intrigued to see a Baseball-esque WAR goalie value compared to salary (how many more wins over typical .913 goalie).

if Sather allows Hank to leave he will be public enemy #1 in New York surpassing Arod.

Like Sather would care...he's been public enemy off and on during his tenure here, and he obviously could not care less. Dolan loves Sather, Sather knows Dolan's opinion is the only one that matters, and that's that.

That said, Sather's MO is that he overpays for UFA's, so if history is any indication the only question is how much Sather will overpay Hank...and what effect that will have on our salary cap and our ability to field a competitive team around him.

8 years, 56M easy. The question is how much over 7M/year he's looking for, considering he'll be on a max year deal and be 32 when it starts. Not saying he'll be worth that kind of money in 7 or 8 years...but if he can give us a half dozen hank like years I'll take it.

Offer him a 6-year $42.5M extension.

Year | Age | Salary
2014-15 | 32 | $10m
2015-16 | 33 | $10m
2016-17 | 34 | $7.5m
2014-16 | 35 | $5m
2015-17 | 36 | $5m
2016-18 | 37 | $5m

Cap Hit: $7,083,333

If you want to add another two years at the end at $5m per, that would drop the cap hit to $6,562,500. That increases the likelihood of early retirement penalties though.

I would give him 48m over 6. 8 mil per, a little over a million bump per year from what he's making now. I would want to stay away from the max deal only because he's already 32

I think Hank wants to win so bad, he will take the same if not less so the team has more flexibility cap space wise. Just my opinion... 6 years 6 per?

Al tho, I am running on only 3 hours of sleep, so I could just be in la la land lol.

Not a bad starting point for Sather and Rangers management. But if you're keeping it at 6 years, I think Lundqvist gets more than what equates to a $200K raise annually. I think the cap hit winds up around $7.5M on a 6 year deal. Lower if it goes to 7 or 8 years.

Lundqvist takes a cut and Sather winds up with more cap space.

Sounds like the opposite of a win-win.

No doubt. If the Rangers are talking 6 years, Hank is talking 8M/per.

Hank ISN'T LEAVING. How is this concept so hard for people in this thread to grasp? He LOVES New York, and has business interests here. His family loves it, and is embedded here. He wants to be a Ranger for life, and isn't interested in riding them to the bank. It's not in his nature.

He will finish his career here, and his contract extension will show that.

This thread title pisses me off every time I see it in the index.

It pisses me off only in as much as the guy still has a year left on his contract. All the talk of him being dealt at the draft are beyond ridiculous.

We can all rest easy now.

We can all rest easy now.

If you're a fan of the team, and have been following Henrik for the past 7-8 years, you know how he feels toward the team itself, the city, his intentions are clear. For any of you to think otherwise simply means you haven't been paying close enough attention.

He himself has said it many, many times over the years. He wants to retire a New York Ranger, AND he's mentioned in countless interviews how New York is his true second home, and he will be making a life here even after his career is finished.

Sweden will always be his number one home, but he is settled here, and wants to raise his family here. He is the king of this city, and wants to win a cup HERE. Not anywhere else.

Oh, and I am coaching a goalie clinic with him again this year in August, so I will be sure to talk with him about it again and further cement his sentiment with you guys here. ;)

I think his desire to win a Stanley Cup trumps all that romantic garbage. And if this team cant prove to him that they're capable of putting a roster around him that can reach that goal, I could see him leaving at some point.

The only dense opinion here is you being so dismissive about that possibility.

You actually have it backwards. He wants to win the Stanley Cup HERE in NEW YORK. Not with the Carolina Hurricanes, or the Florida Panthers.

His family, his love for the city, and his business interests are what is more important than hockey anyway. That is hardly romantic garbage.

Henrik is not going to get up and move everything, and the city he loves and adores, to go try and win a Stanley Cup in another market. It's important to him, but winning it HERE is his absolutely his goal.

That's pretty obvious, but what is going on is business and Lundqvist is not going to take a discount for his services, just because he loves New York. I happen to think this thread is much ado about nothing because Sather wants and needs to retain his goaltender. They will work something out. The only question is how long and how much.

End of story.

He absolutely will, especially if it benefits the team. He's not some pompous, ******* basketball or baseball player who is going to command to be paid the most, just because he is the best. He has all the money he will ever need ALREADY, now its just about winning and doing whats best to win HERE in New York.

He will paid handsomely and will be locked up for the rest of his career with this extension.

I don't think the fact that people who have enough to continue with their lifestyle for the rest of their life (and well beyond) comes into play during a contract negoitation. When their agents are sitting across the table from their boss, they want what they are worth now.

Lundqvist will get paid something close to what he is--one of the best goaltenders in the NHL and an important, perhaps the most important, piece of what Sather hopes is a championship team. He's going to get a raise. And Sather will ultimately come to an agreement, because he needs Lundqvist.
