Of course. But what would change? Unless we fire Tort to change the system and add some players that actually perform, we'll most likely be in an even worse situation than we are in now.

Can only fix one thing at a time...there is a whole thread devoted to Torts and Sather for that part of your post :)

Well, we can't add players that perform with Hank having a giant contract.

It's a huge risk. With Hank we know what we have, and most likely will have for at least 4-5 years more. We brought in Nash for big money, and so far he's not earned a lot of it (first year and all, I'm not calling him a bust yet), we brought in Richards for huge money, and him I am calling a bust, and as we know, Richards is not the only bust in recent memory that has earned quite the paycheck here and not performed anything close to what we've expected.

Unless we fire Torts/get players who don't choke in the playoffs, expect more of the status quo.

Want to tell me the salaries of the Cup Winning goalies since the 04-05 lockout? I can pretty much guarantee that aside from Tim Thomas the majority had team friendly contracts.

I made a list in a different thread, but I can't find it.

Basically Thomas and Fleury both had $5 million cap hits when they won the cup (which seems team-friendly compared to a lot of lesser goalies), and Ward, Giguere, Osgood, Niemi, and Quick were well below that.

Why the hell should the Rangers do what's best for Hank? They need to only worry about doing what is best for the Rangers.

Exactly right. We are living in a cap world and ultimately management has to do what's best for the team in fitting in all the pieces and making it work.

I knew Thomas had the 5 mil cap hit but couldn't remember if MAF got his contract before or after the Cup

Absolutely true, but if resigning Hank is the team's only option* for staying competitive, they need to do what's necessary.

*What I mean by that is that we don't have any goalie prospects in the pipeline and legitimate starting goalies aren't exactly available all the time.

Term is more important than anything, though.

Yes. I'd assume regarding contract terms, length, money, whatever it is, the Rangers offer Hank between 7-8 million/ yr, and get close or use the max length (8 years). If the Rangers trend in the direction of winning and bettering the team to win a cup, I think he stays no doubt with that contract.

8 years is a long contract

Is there a player in the NHL who deserves an 8-year deal more than Lundqvist?

Surely Crosby, Malkin, probably Stamkos and you could argue Quick (Cup, Smythe, possible taking his team into at least the 3rd round 2 years in a row)?

Outside of Brodeur and Hasek, how many goalies are/were still on top of their game past 35?

Crosby is on a 11 year deal, Malkin will most likely get close to an identical contract. Stamkos will get an 8 year for sure, and Quick is on a 9 year contract.

Not all at their peak, and neither were Brodeur or Hasek, but I can think of plenty who were great after 35.

Thomas. Belfour. Fuhr. CuJo. etc.

And Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos and maybe Quick are all deserving of 8 year deals. But not more so than Henrik.

The Brooks article was atrocious. "There is very little doubt that Lundqvist will surpass Alex Ovechkin ($9.538 million per) as the NHL’s highest paid player." Actually, Brooks, there is nothing but doubt. "Lundqvist’s asking price is likely to be a minimum of $80 million for eight years... It is a King’s Ransom, all right, but he will get it." Really? He's likely gonna get more than multiple Hart winners? Really? I may as well give my dog a keyboard and let him write this crap.

Don't really know, but why does Hank deserve 8 years?

He's played a lot of hockey so far and an 8 year deal brings him to what 40?? His style is tough on hips and knees...

8 years is long for any player but its very long for a goalie

EXACTLY. There's so much fuzz over speculation by 1 person, and after reading his article, how can anyone take him seriously?

I, in no way, want to see Lundy leave the Rangers, but if he does have his sights set on $10m it will probably happen. Just for hypotheticals, if he sai he wanted out:
- this season you have Bernier as a RFA who likely wants out due to Quick being the starter, or you could look at a probablt amnestied Luongo.
- next season you have potential UFAs of Halak, Elliot, Crawford, Miller, Hiller and RFAs Reimer, varlamov and Andersen (ANA).

Not all those guys would be available, and none are as good as Hank, but there are other options if he wants to 'take the money and run'

Forgot Roy. ;)

...and to a lesser degree, Beezer, Richter, Osgood (he's vastly underrated imo).

Reports coming out that the Colorado Avalanche are willing to trade their first overall pick for an elite goaltender. Buffalo Sabres' goaltender Ryan Miller is highly sought of in Colorado's list of goaltenders in the running. Thoughts on this?

say if Avs offered 1st overall pick and Duchene (example) for Lundqvist.... if that was an offer would you do it??? i still wouldnt but at the same time if NYR was able to get 1st overall, that can help this team in a big way in the future..
