Tall kid with good reach but doesn't really use his size.

Extremely skilled, great hands and a ton of tools offensively.

Defensively he still has room to improve and will likely fill out his 6'3, 175 lbs frame as he matures.

Basically, an extremely offensively gifted center with long reach. His 1-on-1 stuff could use some work.

This pick was way off the board though damn. They must have seen something.

This is dumb. It's one thing to take a risk on a diamond in the rough, but understanding the opportunity cost of assets is a vital part of being a GM. If they wanted to go off the board then trade down, or get veteran assets for the 1st rounder, as opposed to picking someone who was available last year and undrafted and likely not on any other team's first round hot list.

Easier to teach skating than hands & vision.

Also, we went off the board to grab Matheson too.

Let's see this kid play out.

I really hope they didn't just base this off his Junior-A points, because that league is in no way comparable to the mens league. Plenty of players in that league that went PPG or better and didn't even make the mens league.

Let's not forget the Panther have the record for the longest playoff drought in NHL history. They have that record because they can't draft for crap and basically this 100 plus point season doesn't take away the fact that this is a Mickey Mouse organization.

we have new scouts/head of scouting and a new gm so this doesn't apply.

Our drafting has been pretty good the last few years.

Once again he was on other first round lists as well per Pronman. I'm a fan of the pick.

Lets not forget we have one of the youngest deepest and most talented team in the league who's window for winning is just opening.

Not comparable to Matheson at all, some mocks had Mike in the first round, ALL of them had him going in the top two rounds; with this guy Borgstrom NO mocks had him in the first round and very few had him even in the second. Mocks aren't everything but man oh man this seems like extremely poor value on an asset.

Psssh.

You've never seen the player. You don't know NHL team rankings list. You watch a stream and see higher ranked players passed up.

Borgstrom will have definitely been in the 1st round on other teams lists. Perhaps you could have got him later, perhaps not, but there is no need to fall into the standard fan trope of bashing picks in the heat of the moment based on no information other than that you've been fed by rankings and media.

I just don't get this selection AT ALL.

We have an abundance of young, solid centers. We are still very weak on the wing and in net. Obviously there's not a lot of goalies available, but you go way off the board for this selection to fill a position WE ALREADY HAVE TOO MUCH OF.

Seriously what the ****?

I'd bet that more than half of the kids drafted as "centers" don't play center in the NHL.

That's why we have 33.

Exactly, and with Bob MacKenzie putting this guy at 35 overall and Pronman saying teams were looking to get him at the end of the first round, one of those guys will be available at 33.

Plus the Panthers best scout might just be their guy from Finland.
