Player Discussion: Hellebuyck for Hart

Not sure if this was posted earlier, but this is pretty interesting. Only 15% of players polled feel that Helle is the best goalie. Percentage wise, he winds up #3.

Was that prior to the start of the season?

I love that Comrie got some votes for someone who would make a good broadcaster some day... I'd tune into games just to watch him if they gave him Sawyer's job lol

Love that guy's personality

It's weird because before the Dallas game it seemed like most of the pundits and writers were leaning Drai/MacK. But then Drai and MacK got injured, Helle had a big statement shutout vs Dallas and all the sudden TSN, Sportsnet, THN and a few of the odds makers were all saying they are voting Helle for Hart.

The Dallas game coupled with Drai/MacK not playing down the stretch made for a massive narrative shift among the voters that I have noticed. We'll see if Helle plays one more game to close out the season but honestly I think he might have a slight lead now. Provided he doesn't S the B in the final game he should have as good a shot as anyone to win it.

Yup, definitely a shift. Not sure it was that sudden. He must have been creeping up in the backs of their minds for a while. I think the string of 3 consecutive starts against F**k Vegas, StL and Dallas giving up just 1 goal got their attention though.

Don't know if this exists or not, but for some it might support their narrative that Wpg Jets really aren't that good. It is just Helle dragging them to the Presidents Trophy. If that is the case then he must be the MVP, no?

Yeah it seems like those 3 games cemented it. It seems that the opposite argument is often brought up that the team defence is massively improved and that his new found level of dominance may be a product of that.

That is some pretty effective locker room billboard material right there.

Stolarz is four minutes away from a shutout. That might put him above Hellebuyck as far as save percentage.
Not leading in that category could hurt Hellebuyck in his chance for the Hart.

Hellebuyck is now also second in GAA to Kuemper. I think that's a bigger deal than the save percentage since Stolarz played in way less games than Hellebuyck won!

I don't know where to put this so I'll put it here. Apologies if it is already been discussed.
Did anybody see the media scrum and Helle's response to Paul Friesen's two questions?
I don't think too many of the Jets' players care for Paul Friesen.

What did I miss?

I think that the obvious argument for Helle for MVP would be to ask ourselves which team would have had worst outcome this year had their candidate not been able to play

Colorado, Tampa and Edmonton would have all been worse off for sure had they not had their guys, but to me the Jets would have fallen farther - which, to me, makes Helle MVP by definition

If the Hart Trophy definition was "outstanding player", or anything other then "most valuable", then maybe there's a discussion for someone else... but that's not the case

Vezina hands down for Helle, not really even close this year. Hart it's a toss up, great years by both Draisaitl and Helle.
This was Draisaitl's 4th best season in terms of scoring. He's 6 points ahead of the second highest scoring guy on his team. Tough to say this was a great year for him. Good year, for sure.

But I guess the measuring stick is who is more important to his team.

Helly's Career Playoff SV%

2024-25 0.824
2023-24 0.864
2022-23 0.886
2020-21 0.931
2019-20 0.904
2018-19 0.913
2017-18 0.922

Playoff SV% of the last 10 Stanley Cup winners

2023-24 Bobrovsky 0.906
2022-23 Hill 0.932
2021-22 Kuemper 0.902
2020-21 Vasilevskiy 0.937
2019-20 Vasilevskiy 0.927
2018-19 Binnington 0.914
2017-18 Holtby 0.922
2016-17 Fleury / Murray 0.924 / 0.937
2015-16 Murray 0.923
2014-15 Crawford 0.924

Can the Jets win the Stanley Cup this season? Sure, but Helly does need to play better statistically. The last goalie to win the Cup with a playoff SV% less than 0.900 was Grant Fuhr in 1987-88 with a SV% of 0.883, except keep in mind the Oilers of that year just outscored their defensive issues. Theses Jets aren't those Oilers.

We need Helly to stop all those shots every goalie should stop, but also some of the shots that mere mortal goalies won't stop.

agreed. last game you can argue the Jets bailed out Helle with the last half of the game allowing only 1-2 SOGs on net, after Helle gave up 3 on 15 or 16 w/e it was.

I think they should be ok with even mediocre-Helle vs STL. but really need star-Helle in future rounds imo.

over the last few PO years, he's been under the PO average in SV%. not necessarily something to expect to continue to go forward, he's built up to strong of a resume to expect the mid or worse PO play to continue.
