Hellebuyck at $8.5 or Shesterkin at $11.5?

Bias alert as a Jets fan, but I probably take Hellebuyck even on matching contracts. He’s been SO steady, SO consistently on such mediocre teams. We’re lucky to have him and with a 3 mil discount I wouldn’t look at the second name before picking him.

Hellebuyck took a ridiculously bad contract for himself when he had Bobrovsky, Price, Vasilevsky as comparables. This isn't rocket science.
Maybe it was more like team-friendly?
With Lightning and other teams it worked out just fine.
The current, defending Stanley Cup champions might disagree.
I would take Igor only because he has shown promise that he could carry a team in the playoffs stealing games and perhaps an entire series or more.
Teams don't hang banners in the rafters for "saving money" on player contracts.

Simply put - I think he's the slightly better goalie, and has especially done a lot better in playoffs. He's also younger by almost 3 years.
I don't think you're going to win or lose a Stanley Cup based on a $3M AAV difference. That's like a 13th forward and a 7th defenseman. You might win or lose a cup if your #1 goalie is so old that he's declining, or if your #1 goalie has struggled in playoffs.
Don't mean to be too harsh on Helle, whose done really well lately. I just prefer Shesterkin slightly.

No, but teams that save money by convincing players to take team friendly contracts can add other players with the money saved and have a better chance of hanging banners.

I'm not saying you should just have a revolving door of udfa goalies as cheap as possible. But you dont need to pay a goalie over 10 mill a year when you can pay a goalie half or less than half that and get similar/identical results.
Thomas in 2011, Quick in 2012/2014, Crawford in 2013/2015, Binnington in 2019, Kuemper in 2022, Hill in 2023. All making 6 million or less, all good enough to win a cup.
Edit - I even forgot Matt Murray, who was still on his rookie deal when he led the penguins to a cup in 2016.

The $3M isn’t about getting a 7D, it’s about being able to make a deadline trade that removes your current $3M 7D and replaces him with a $6M 2D.
I am totally understand what you are both saying and I am not going to disagree with you. That being said I originally responded to someone who had said, "Cheaper the goalie the better" so in that vein Jets fans should be lining up to trade Helle to Pittsburgh for Jarry because he's $3 million dollars cheaper and just think of what they could spend that money on to improve their hopes as a potential contender for the Cup.
As it pertains to what the thread is asking, I'm still taking Igor contract and all.
