I had one 15 years ago and sold it when I moved to Chicago. Couple of things to consider.....
- How much space do you have for a tank? A 20 gallon tank usually is around 2ft x 1ft and 16 inches high....Its a good starting size, manageable, and doesn't take up too much room.
- Size of the tank determines the number of fish you can have...You definitely don't want to overcrowd the tank. Its not good for the fish and it means you'll have to clean the tank more frequently. Cleaning that tank sucks, but its part of the gig of owning fish. When fish tanks smell, its because people aren't cleaning their tanks frequently enough. If you have smaller fish (shorter than 2 inches), you can probably have up to 8-10, for a 20 gallon tank.
- Type of fish you want also should be considered. Some fish don't play well with other species. Some fish are solitary, some are schooling. Knowing what kind of fish you want will determine how many you should buy, how big of a tank you need, and what type of vegetation/structure to put in your tank.
If you're just getting started, I'd stick with something 20 gallons or less. Freshwater is a lot easier than saltwater. When I started, I had a 20 gallon tank with 7-8 Tiger Barbs. They were pretty hardy, and are active fish as long as you have at least 4-5 of them in a school.
