Having multiple favorite teams is not a popular thing, right?

I don’t see why not
You have your main team
But when my main team was being run by a bunch of a$$-hats and missed the playoffs 8 of the past 9 years.
I adopted one in the playoffs to root for.
exactly what this Hab fan did when Bergevin, Molson and Therrien were rotting the franchise

I was born in 1968 and grew up in NW Ontario. Was a Habs fan from mid 70s to early 80s and beyond. I loved the way Gilbert Perrault played and had a fond feeling for Buffalo. Much of my family lived in Alberta, became an Oilers fan and moved to Edmonton in 1984. Was a big fan of how Sather ran the team. Since he moved to NY, I have always had a soft spot for the Rangers.

So Oilers 1st.
Anyone playing the Flames or Leafs 2nd.
Montreal 3rd.
Rangers 4th.
Sabres 5th.

For the 5th highest ranking North America sport, we sure love being assholes to fans and wonder why were 5th.

I mean, it's not as if the same mindset doesn't exist in every league in every sport.

Being fans of multiple teams means supporting multiple teams with more money… jerseys, tickets…

Other sports can afford it…

I was born and raised in mtl so habs are my favorite team, I moved out west 22 years ago so I get to see way more western teams play and have no issue cheering for them if they play Boston.

Well I cheer for anyone who plays Boston, and my habitant.

This is a good strategy. Love your home club and hate all the rest. Then for sure there are results each night that are satisfying.
yep
for example
going back the last say 7 seasons, I have been able to pull for
Caps
Bruins
Bruins
Jackets
Habs #1
Bolts
Panthers

who's turn is it this April to take out the leafs . 😉

Being a fan of different teams in different leagues and different sports, totally normal and popular.

Claiming to be a fan of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is weird and is pretty telling about the person's insecurities.

When I hear someone say "I am a fan of Edmonton and Pittsburgh" (true story, I actually know someone like that) I right away think they are glory chasing and substituting their own feeling of self worth with how well either one of those teams are doing.

I have no doubt the only purpose of doing this is to eventually be able to say "my team is the best and they won it all".
More teams equals more opportunies to be fan of a "winner".

Are there people who are fluid when it comes to simply loving good hockey and being somewhat genuinely fluid in their allegiances based on the level of play?
Absolutely.

The majority of dual or triple fans are glory chasers and don't want to deal with the heartache of being a fan of bad or mediocre teams.

That being said, you can root for whatever you want.

Just don't be surprised if people look at you weird if you support Manchester City and United at the same time.

Nothing wrong with liking many teams. Players move around. Makes sense that some people might bounce around. No hard feelings. No gatekeeping. We all love hockey, and we all love The Shield. For all I care, you can love all 32 teams

Not so much a fan for most as it is just the most accessible team in your area. For myself, my beginning was free tickets to a game. If one had a chance to evaluate each team with their unique styles and personalities, they might just be a fan of hockey.

Ok so I don't want this to turn into a rant but I have a friend who is a fan of both the Leafs and Lightning. Originally a Maple Leafs fan but switched over around 2015 to Tampa as well (start of their success, Leafs ongoing futility). If you have multiple favorite teams, you have no favorite teams, right? I have seen other people mention this and I just find it gross. What if they're playing each other? Just wrong.*

*To clarify I'm not saying you can't have teams you like more than others, just that you can't like a team equally. I.e. I've always found Dallas to be cool, and if it was say Dallas and Carolina in the finals I'm cheering for the Stars, but if it was Dallas vs Florida I want a 4 game sweep winning by 10 goals all 4.

Like I found this thread and it's 25% which seems very high to me: Are you a Fan of One Team or Multiple?

I've been a Leaf and Lightning guy at various points over the years. Leafs are my real team but started cheering for the Rimouski Brothers Lecavalier Richards combo after the 1998 draft, happy to see them win the Cup in 2004, then shifted into the Stamkos Hedman era and the climb to championship after that point... also weird and coincidental they went to a pure blue and white combo so that suited me just fine. Leafs and Lightning never really had anything to do with one another and were at different phases in their competitive cycle so it was never a problem.

But when your primary team starts forming a rivalry and meeting in the playoffs, I can't have that.

I can see it , if a fan of one team, and then move to a different city, and cheer for the new hometown team as well.
Or possibly another team you like to follow in the opposite conference.

Who cares what a bunch of ass clowns on the internet think. Cheer for whoever you want.

I like the Bruins out east, watch most of their games. Flames are still my main squeeze but I would consider myself a fan of both teams.
What made you interested in the Bruins? Was it them pounding the Canucks? :p

Have a team that you love

and then a few teams that you hate so much you love to watch them lose

I like taking note of everyone's favorite team in my fantasy leagues. I draft prominent players from that team, and make them overpay later in a trade :D

Or like this year I drafted Giroux. Although he's in Ottawa now, I still got a nice haul from a Philly fan.

Sadly I didn't think to trade Hamilton before he got injured. Was on my 'definitely not' list.

The dangers of fandom.

Actually kind of haha, after that Finals is when I started following them semi seriously.
I absolutely despised that Canucks team.

But they are also my dads team, play in a division against a bunch of Canadian teams I don't like, and I just kind of respect how they run their franchise. Good culture. They usually play at 5pm my local time and the Flames are usually on at 8 so it works out well.
