Ok so I don't want this to turn into a rant but I have a friend who is a fan of both the Leafs and Lightning. Originally a Maple Leafs fan but switched over around 2015 to Tampa as well (start of their success, Leafs ongoing futility). If you have multiple favorite teams, you have no favorite teams, right? I have seen other people mention this and I just find it gross. What if they're playing each other? Just wrong.*

*To clarify I'm not saying you can't have teams you like more than others, just that you can't like a team equally. I.e. I've always found Dallas to be cool, and if it was say Dallas and Carolina in the finals I'm cheering for the Stars, but if it was Dallas vs Florida I want a 4 game sweep winning by 10 goals all 4.

Like I found this thread and it's 25% which seems very high to me: Are you a Fan of One Team or Multiple?

Okay I'm a leafs fan but I'm truly a fan of hockey itself. I love ovie I followed him since he came into the league and at that time leafs were not qualifying for the playoffs so I found myself rooting for the capitals i even own ovie jersey . I notice when I yell score in my house for the caps it's not as powerful as the one for the leafs so like as many teams as you want but there will only be one In your heart

I grew up a die hard Caps fan. Admittedly haven’t followed them closely the last few years

I got espn+ and check what the most interesting matchups are any day, or I watch a few teams to follow a player I like.

I do largely consider myself a neutral fan

Of course people can have multiple favorite teams. The gatekeeping mentality that restricts real fandom to latching oneself onto a specific team and forsaking all others is quite obnoxious, really. It fails to consider that many, many people take a more general interest in the sport and are not fixated on area codes or whatever the so-called "real" fans base their support on.

Bandwagon fans are out in force in this thread lmao.

Bandwagon? I have one team, and only one. I'm not a fan of other teams since I'm married to my SHL team. I don't share my unconditional love for that team, no matter the sport. Instead, I've been able to objectively follow the NHL for over 30 years and I can assure you that there's nothing bandwagon about that. Even if it were though, that doesn't make me any lesser fan of the sport than you.

Not a real fan of you cheer for multiple teams.
I'd argue a person that is able to watch and cheer for more than one team religiously is probably more passionate than most one team fans.

A lot of hockey fans barely have time to catch the full 82 games of the one team they follow..to dedicate yourself to more than one team takes a lot of time out of your day that many people can't or don't want to do.

There's nothing wrong with either. But I always found the "if you are a fan of more than one team you aren't a fan of any team" take pretty bad.

I feel it's pretty different in Europe. I love Bruins, but often find myself watching Arizona/Anaheim/LA early in the morning because it's way more sustainable and easier for me.

I like those teams too, wouldn't mind if they won.

I'm a diehard isles fan but have respect for how well some teams have been managed over the course of their history

Is there something wrong with following what you find to be the most entertaining at the time? This is hockey not religion.
There is something very wrong with bandwagon fans and especially the ones that try defending bandwagoning.

The most annoying thing about them is constantly bragging about their team being the best. Like no shit bro, you switch teams to the heavy favorite every couple years, of course "your team" will be the best. I have a cousin like this and absolutely cannot stand him.

I'm an Arizona Coyotes fan first and a Tampa Bay Lightning fan second. I follow both teams religiously and it's difficult, but I love hockey so I don't mind watching 162 games a season (since they play each other twice). The reason I have for this is because I was born in Arizona but got married to a Tampa Bay fan. I hope that's valid. :P

The word fan is something very typical for american-english speakers. In british-english the word supporter is more common.

A supporter is the one who supports his team in every aspects. Win/Lose, e.t.c. He follows every steps the team passes. He is loyal to his club.

A fan is the other one who mainly just don't really follow the club as the supporter, i.e he is not making any complements towards his club. He really doesn't know most of the aspects of his club, e.g finances, transfers, inside management, e.t.c

So you can be a fan of multiple clubs, but not a supporter of multiple clubs.

If someone is watching based on who the best teams are at the moment, I just see someone that wants to watch the highest quality hockey at the moment. Maybe they don't have an emotional tie to a singular team, doesn't make them any less of a hockey fan though. At the end of the day, they are still spending a considerable amount of time watching hockey like you and I.

The most annoying thing about them is constantly bragging about their team being the best. Like no shit bro, you switch teams to the heavy favorite every couple years, of course "your team" will be the best. I have a cousin like this and absolutely cannot stand him.
That type of attitude is annoying whether you follow multiple teams or not though.

Hell, fans brag about their teams all the time even when their teams aren't the best.

Everyone should be a bandwagon fan! Watch what you find entertaining.

I used to be a diehard Blackhawks fan and I really started to question why I spent so much time and energy following some group of men from around the world that just so happen to play for the city I live nearest to. Why was I letting some sports team affect my happiness depending on if they won or loss? And why was I limiting myself to watching one team when starting around 2017 the Hawks were quite boring? So nowadays, I follow the guys on my fantasy teams and usually latch onto a couple teams that I find interesting. For the last couple years I watched Toronto and now I have moved onto New Jersey. Granted, I'm not a jersey-wearer or buy any team merch for that matter. I just watch the games, listen to podcasts, and follow the entire league keying in on a few favorites. When the team I like loses in the playoffs, I just switch to another game. Gone are my days of passionately watching a team and living and dying on their results. Overall, I enjoy hockey so much more because of it.
