Have you seen Link Gaetz?

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
Wild how you've got enforcers like Berube, Domi, Ray all still very involved in hockey with great reputations and then there's guys like Gaetz and Matt Johnson who have fallen on the worst times imaginable, just crazy such a discrepancy can exist and that's not even mentioning guys who have passed like Peat and Boogaard

Hope he can get some sort of help, dude has had a pretty rocky life
It's a race between his liver and his brain to see which one is going to give up first.

He's one of a kind. I don't want to hear about CTE and substances. My man was already raising more Hell than a gang of bikers as a teenager. The game didn't do it to him. The game might be the only thing that kept him alive.

As to why they can't find him, the guy is like Josey Wales. Even if you see him, you have a decision to make. Do I acknowledge that I know who he is and spend the rest of the day dealing with him, or do I pretend I have no idea and have a nice easy day? It's not like he's a rapist or a murderer. He's just not worth the effort.

What was that show he did where rhey fought in the middle of the ice? It was a PPV that bombed.

That's it.

I remember how hard of a time the promoters had finding a venue that would host it.
If I remember right there was a weird legal grey zone around this event. It's not a hockey game it's a fighting PPV, but they didn't go through any of the legal channels for sanctioning a fight. Like it wasn't (and probably still isn't) clear if you need a sanctioning body or a boxing license to host what is essentially a boxing match but on skates.

That one with Link was ~2004 if I recall correctly, and the first one of its kind.
Then they did another one in Finland if my memory serves. Then there was a long gap of many years until A.J. Galante (of Danbury Trashers and Netflix fame) took over the reigns and hosted many of these "ice" battles.

I believe I've watched them all, couldn't believe it back in '03 (reading it on the hockeyfights message boards) when I heard it was in the works. I never thought I'd see anything like it.

Yes. Now that you mention it, I recall that was the central issue for finding a venue.

I was on a hockey forum at the time and I recall only one poster paying for the PPV and everyone else lamvasting the event and some mocking him for paying for the PPV.

Damn.. buddy went from Howie Long to Harvey Weinstein in like 15 years

Saw Link play in the AHL early 90s, must have been with Cape Breton when he was still in his Howie Long phase. He got kicked out early and left the ice to a chorus of boos in the opposition rink. He showered and then showed up to watch the rest of the game sitting in the stands with a hottie on each arm, nobody dared say a word to him.

In Gaetz's case he legitimately has brain damage from the 1992 motorcycle accident that ended his career which has impacted his impulse control.

He was a loose canon before that but afterward went right off the rails. And there's not really anything that can fix it. We had a family friend that had a similar injury in an accident about 20 years ago and he 'recovered' to be a semi-functioning member of society but continually made ghastly/reckless life decisions until he died in another high-speed car accident several years later.

I don't think I've ever seen someone play so few NHL games and have such a high profile as this guy
Which is ironic because he's like bigfoot when it comes to modern day encounters.

You can be in a coffee shop and think to yourself "Is that Link Gaetz" then look away for a second and he's in another province fishing for salmon.

Part of it's the lore/stories/anecdotes around the guy.

The other part is the huge 'what if?' around his career-ending accident. This was actually going to be a high-profile NHLer in the realm of a Tie Domi or Gino Odjick - he was legitimately terrifying but he could also play pretty well for a 1990s enforcer. His rookie year he was pacing to score 10 goals and obliterate single-season NHL PIM record (543/80). And then he was gone.
