Confirmed with Link: Haula to NSH for Hanzel and a 2025 4th round pick

How many season tickets need to be sold to make up for that $3.15M cap hit?

In a vacuum it's fine. It's whatever. The problem Trotz has is

1. He could've waited for free agency to die down and basically sign the same guy for probably less and not give up assets.

2. He either doesn't care or doesn't realize how bipolar and out of control his moves are from an optics perspective. And I honestly don't know which one it is.

3. Even if this means we are moving one of the veterans: it means we replaced a vet with a vet. Why?

4. And I can't believe I have to say this: Trotz learned nothing from the Marchy move if he's bringing Haula in. Haula is a fire brand and a vocal locker room guy like Marchy. If we suck again, which we will, how does bringing a personality like Haula help?

It's honestly unfathomable

Honestly, NJ should have been giving us a draft pick to take on a washed 34-year old bottom-6 player with a $3.15M Cap hit.

There's no justification whatsoever for us giving up that #99 pick to add that player. Especially a couple weeks before free agency opens. We're not a competitive team that needs to shore up our bottom-6 depth for a playoff run. We need those spots for integrating young players into the lineup. If NJ was just trying to dump him and we could leverage our Cap space to pick up an extra draft pick along the way, ok, that might have made more sense. But we shouldn't be giving up picks or prospects to acquire that kind of player.

On its own, I dont get it. This team is already so full of old vets .

If this leads to moving one of McCarron or Sissons for a similar or greater return, then this is perfectly fine.

It's probably useless to try until we see what else we do this summer. I doubt this was a move Trotz made without others being planned. I mean, anything's possible ..yeah, I know, "Trotz bad lulz," but I'm doubting it
The problem is mindset. Does Trotz want to run it back one more time? How does he want to do that? A lot of UFAs next year on the team which usually means strong seasons. If not TDL trade bait. Part of me says Screw it, get a few more UFAs and burn it down next year.

I was worried we were running short on veteran mentors so glad we got him. Also, not that it matters but he’s got a $3M cap hit so should definitely be in cap dump territory not give up assets for him.
I’m not sure Hansel nor a 4th round pick in this year’s draft would actually be considered an asset.

As much hate and skepticism as he gets, I just don't see Trotz prioritizing an Erik Haula as a key cog in "running it back." That's not to say that's not the plan, this team was bad but also wildly underperformed last season.

But to me it strongly feels like the type of deal you do to plug a gap you know you'll have due to other trades incoming (or even as a preliminary to a further trade with Jersey). I'm thinking a Sissons or maybe even a Big Sexy/Smith (Marchy I think is undoubtedly gone, but Haula doesn't fill that role).
