Has there ever been an example of team mates trying to hold back a player(s) from a scrum or fight?

I know refs do it all the time. But have actual team mates go "It's not worth it" and try to calm a player down and ensure he doesn't get into a scrum or fight?

Dudes jump in to tie a guy up so stars don’t fight- feels like I’m seeing more and more of that. Tkachuk was banged up to start the year and I think a teammate got in the midst of his scrum, if I’m remembering right.

There isn’t much time to talk, so jumping in seems the more common tactic.

Not a player, but the Blues' head athletic trainer Ray Barile stopped David Backes from trying to get involved in a scrum. It was right after Brent Seabrook knocked him out with a dirty hit to the head in the playoffs. Barile, and to a lesser extent Steen, were holding him back. Meanwhile, Duncan Keith was mocking an injured Backes as he was stumbling to the ice, having just been unconcious.

You’ll see it happen in scrums occasionally, to prevent a teammate from taking a penalty usually.

in the last minute of game six of the 1994 finals, with the canucks up 4-1 and having forced game seven, adam graves blindsides trevor linden away from the play and then as linden is on the ice crawling to the bench messier takes a swing at him, leading to this famous call by the great jim robson.



it wasn’t caught on camera but the way the reporters tell it, pat quinn jumped on sergio momesso’s back to prevent him from hopping the boards to fight messier.

i think everyone in vancouver wishes he hadn’t.

I ran into him a twice during his Kings tenure (he lived near my parents house) when I started college. Super nice, relaxed, spoke to me for about 5min each time. Just hockey talk. I believe he got his law degree after he retired.

When the Canucks and Flames had that big line brawl to open the game Kevin Bieksa came up from his usual defense position to take the face off and fight Kevin Westgarth off the drop.

IIRC Bieksa said he did this because it was Kellan Lain’s first NHL game and he didn’t want him to have to fight Westgarth, who was a fairly established enforcer at the time.

Though, he did end up fighting Westgarth in the brawl anyway lol

First one that came to mind. Entire Hawks bench including Keenan using a stick. Didn’t work.
