Has there ever been a worse offseason and trade deadline by a new GM than what Barry Trotz pulled off?

This isn't even close to as bad as some of the things Trotz and Yzerman have done lately. Loui Ericksson was never in the top 10 worst contracts in the league.

Gudbranson got a 4 million dollar contract after his canucks term was up. And he played a full season last year. I get that these hit close to home but I just dont think they compare

Hahahahahah
You serious?

Arizona had a pretty bad one, they lost everyone to Utah for nothing.

In that case, Bill Armstrong is simultaneously the worst GM in the history of the NHL as well as the best GM in the history of the NHL. After his blunder of losing all his players for nothing in Arizona, he went to Utah and acquired an entire roster for the cost of no assets traded out.

I just have no idea what Trotz is trying to do. I think maybe in the fuzziness of a bad season, he's losing perspective on needs and market pricing. As much as I love the moves for the Penguins' side, I can immediately recognize that they are fairly lopsided in our favor. Not franchise-ruining stuff, but certainly enough for me to feel a bit guilty. So, I'm sorry Nashville fans. I'm sorry you have to deal with him. I don't know if this is a "meh, blow a few trades, learn, and rebound into a good GM" or if we are looking at someone who just isn't cut out to be a GM.

I think the owners have to act this off-season. Whether it's canning him altogether or bringing in an advisor just to run stuff by. Maybe a complete review of the staff is needed? Like, NO ONE in the FO said, "Hey, the TDL is coming up, maybe we can get more for Luke Schenn then?" or "I don't think it's a good idea to waive Fabbro"? Given the relative ease in identifying several "not great" moves, you have to wonder what the actual conversations that preceded them were.

And?
Still a top 10 worst contract in the NHL
And buyout proof
I'm not saying it was good but threes a lot of terrible contracts in this league. Top 10 maybe but if it was a max term deal (7 years)then it would be right at the pinnacle of bad deals. 7 or 8's just hit different for me.

I give you the 2016 offseason and draft by Vancouver

Canucks
- Draft Juolevi over Tkachuk or Sergachev
- Vancouver had a deal in place that if Columbus drafted anybody other than PLD Vancouver would have sent Bo Horvat, Tanev, and the 5th pick to montreal for Subban
- They are the 2nd worst team in the league and they have 5 draft picks……
- they sign loui Eriksson to one of the worst contracts in the NHL, and it is buyout proof
- they trade Jared McCan and picks for Erik FRANKING Gubbranson

As bad as this is, it's really not even close to what Trotz has managed. In a single off season, Trotz turned a team looking poised to have at least a few more years of playoff contention into a bottom feeder with practically no hope of turning things around due to be saddled with awful contracts nobody wants.

It's downright remarkable just how bad Trotz has been. He's almost approaching Benning levels in a fraction of the time. Preds don't deserve Benning levels. :(

They were everyone's darling in the offseason. They added some PP punch to a playoff squad that was lacking it. Seemed like a good addition.

However, last year I thought McDonagh was their best defenseman. Trotz traded him for nothing. McDonagh is leading Tampa bay in +/- this season.
They'd have looked much better keeping him and having a deeper defense. They've also traded away Fabbro, Carrier, Schenn from last year's group.

This thread invites fans of every team to post their own team's worst offseason ever.

To answer the OP, yes other teams have had a similar offseason where everything they touched turned to shiite.

True.

So Lou is only the second worst GM in the league. Good to know.

Trotz needs to get a skinnier neck in order to get more than 11 months of leash on here. Pencil sized I'm thinking.

I'm curious why ownership thought he would be the best choice to replace Poile. I get he was their longtime coach and they even asked him to work In their hockey ops department after they replaced him with Laviolette but good coaches usually dont make good GMs in hockey. It's also not as if they had a Colorado or Tampa esque core in place and all he had to do was sit back and watch them win games.

Given their roster make up, you really needed a veteran executive to replace Poile.
