Has the time come to name a Captain?

I don't think that a captain needs to be named. The Boston Bruins went from 1967-68 to 1972-73 without a captain, winning 2 Stanley Cups. Everybody knew that Johnny Bucyk was the leader, but he didn't wear the C. He wore the C before and after those seasons. A letter doesn't make someone a leader.

I don't have a lot of strong feelings either way about whether the CBJ 'need' a C or not. All teams are led by committee to an extent, but it is a source of honor/pride to wear a letter for any team and I think it's more important to players than a lot of you think.

Whether they name one officially or not, I do think it's quite clear that Dubinsky is the skipper of this group. I'm on board with JMFJ as well, but the fan in me likes the rah rah types a little more so I gravitate towards Dubi. I just love the way the guy handles himself on and off the ice.

Here's the only thing that might get me to care -- if the other players feel that a certain other player who is generally acknowledged by his teammates to be the captain should get the title officially and it is hurting morale that he hasn't been awarded the C because he's earned it and it's a big deal to players and whatnot (and even then I'm not sure I'd be overly concerned, but for the sake of discussion).

The trouble with this scenario is it's so unlikely to happen. One, players have already acknowledged Dubi's leadership publicly and none has mentioned a problem with him not wearing the C. And two, they're not likely to air that in public even if it were the case.

I don't care if there is a C or who is named a C for a few reasons.

1. It won't make me look at the team any differently.
2. It won't increase my enjoyment in watching the team play.
3. I really don't care who out of the current leadership eventually gets named.
4. I doubt there would be any noticeable difference in the team play.
5. Worst case; we have some short term drama. Doubt it, but we are dealing with ego's.

This is a pointless obsession. I even saw a "Well the other 29 teams have one" post. You don't have to follow everyone else. Do what works for you. There was a time where we valued independent thought.

The team will let Richards know when one has to be decided upon. But if the players aren't worried about it, there are other things far more pressing.

Rumor had it that Dubi was upset that Callahan was named C over him and his subsequent "decline" in NY was somewhat related. Just something I've read on Rangers' board but it could be true.

To me I could care less if the Jackets have a C, but I'd vote for Dubi over JJ when the time comes. Just seems like their is more fire in Dubi.

Hey guys, I can help with this. The rumor was that Dubi was upset that "Broadway" Brad Richards was given the "A" before he played even one minute with the team over him. Not that I put a ton of stock into that myself. Cally was always kind of penciled into the "C" by the organization although some fans did want to see Dubi there for a period of time.

As a huge Dubi supporter myself, I'm happy to see he's thriving with you guys. I really like what you guys have going on right now.

Best of luck!

Hey look what I found on the ESPN writeup of last night's win over the Leafs

"Instead, Dubinsky -- the Blue Jackets' unofficial captain in the absence of a designated leader -- streaked up the right wing, took a glance at teammate Mark Letestu during a 2-on-1 break, and rocketed a shot that beat goalie Jonathan Bernier."

It won't be long I don't think before Dubi gets the C. I don't think things like this are written without "unnamed sources" making statements.

I'm not trying to stir the pot here, just thought it was relevant

As much as I love JJ, Dubinsky deserves the C, he's the guy. Johnson and Letestu/Boll as A's.

We have a captain, he just doesn't have a C on the jersey. I'm OK with that. This is the exact opposite of most of the last 8-10 years.

I think that quote comes from Rusty Miller, the AP reporter here in Columbus.

That's kind of how I feel. Dubi's captain in all but letter. He has the drive and the passion - this team will win by the sheer force of his will. He's the go-to person for the media and by reports the guys are coming to see him as captain. Also, and this isn't necessarily something that is a requirement for captain but just something I've noticed, he gets so excited for his teammates and their achievements. Watch his face last night when Murray scored - he was thrilled. Like I said, hardly a prerequisite for captain and plenty of guys are the same way - just something I've noticed about Dubi that rounds him out even more.

Thanks. I figured it was AP but I didn't see any attribution.

Also, that post was written late, hence the conspiratorial tone :sarcasm:

edit: by AP I mean Associated Press, not Portzline

Talking it over with some people last night, there's no better date to give him the C than November 7th. If not that night, then there's no rush. But that would be a sweeeeeeeet day for it to be announced.

I like this idea. I'm still in the school that thinks every day Dubi goes without a C on his jersey is just wrong. What got me going last night (disclaimer: not comparing Dubi to Mark Messier in any way, shape or form), but when he scored his goal last night, he celebrated just like Messier did against the Devils in the '94 conference finals. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw that.

Ryan Murray is the next Blue jackets captain.
Nothing against Dubi, but he's too emotional.
Which is a good thing for a leader, but might be harmful for a captain.
Dubi won't be able to be Dubi with the C on his chest.

You know, I'm not opposed to this. Depending on how the year plays out and they wait until next season.

I don't think you name a second year man as Captain. at least not with the other options available to this team in Dubi and JJ or even Boll for that matter. Murray has enough to handle. Yes he is developing very well and should continue to do so but he is still a long way from a polished NHL'er. Why put more on his plate when you don't have to. Give him some time, there is no need to hurry.

The players would not accept Ryan Murray as captain over Dubi or JJ, or Tuts or ...... No how, no way. In six years maybe Murray. But if a captain were to be named now, Ryan Murray would not even be in the discussion. I cannot take this suggestion as even a serious idea for the current team.
