Has Mike Sullivan Been Fired yet

I don't normally share rumors, largely because I'm usually not in position to know anything. And I'll preface this by saying I can't verify it and that I don't think it's that huge of potential news.

But I had a conversation over the weekend with someone who I hadn't seen in quite some time who previously had some connections to the Penguins, and this person said that the team is bracing for some additional changes this offseason to the coaching staff/pro scouting side of things. I don't think it's anything seismic, though this person believes Sullivan is willing to listen to outside offers from a select few teams if they approach and could exit if the offer is right.

The person I spoke to said that he's heard that Dubas wants to bring in a younger assistant coach who is a rising head coach prospect and who can be a sounding board/resource for the younger players coming up from the AHL. Kind of like how Tocchet was the bridge between some players and Sullivan in 2016/17.

I don't know if that would mean Ty Hennes is out or Mike Vellucci is out or both.

I don't 100% trust this person, because I haven't seen them in a while. But they've had information in the past that's proven correct - and they've also misfired a couple times. But this felt logical and it's also not something outlandish like, "Malkin is retiring! Crosby wants traded!" that I felt I could share. If it doesn't happen, life goes on.

Here’s a thought: why don’t they just fire Sullivan if the plan is to let him “exit” via the back door if the offers are right? Sounds like maybe the rumors are correct that FSG agreed to sign a contract with Sullivan whereby they couldn’t actually fire him lol…morons

My guess is that FSG likes Sullivan and wants him around, but won't stand in his way if he decides he wants a new challenge, change of secenery, or a more immediate chance of winning.

Might I suggest Boston?

Go home, Mike, go home.

If you're Sullivan, why would you?

You've already been fired there once after just a year and a half, and after Bruins management bungled the roster post-lockout and traded your captain just months after signing him to a new contract.

There is greater scrutiny because of the Boston media.

You have an aging owner in Jeremy Jacobs who is a notorious jerk.

And there is no guarantee that the Bruins will be in better position to win than the Penguins.

I just want him gone, I don't care where.

I believe the Penguin ownership will not throw any money away on a coach, even in his last year. They know the contracts have gotten out of hand on aging super stars and could not even offer Guentzel what he is now making. So now it is a period of winding down the big contracts and filling the roster as best you can.

Ownership wants playoffs. They think Sully is a fantastic coach, which is why they signed him to an extension and refused to allow Dubas to fire him last summer.

I still don't think the issue is Dubas not being allowed to fire Sullivan, but Dubas being in complete lockstep with, and having entirely too much undeserved admiration of Sullivan.

-edit- And, of course, that it'd make Sid uncomfortable and/or mad if they fired Sully, so, y'know. But that's verboten discourse.

Ahh, but they have not extended him again. Its getting late on a extension so my guess is next year is his last unless of a miracle.

This is very off base.

The contracts for the aging core are very reasonable with the exception of Karlsson, which FSG knew about when it approved his acquisition.

Guentzel was traded because it was time for a rebuild, not because FSG couldn't offer him a rich contract.

Sullivan is coach because FSG likes him, not because he makes too much to fire.

They do like him, but at some point they'll reach their limit as well if we go four consecutive years without making the playoffs next year.
