Has Colorado’s core underachieved?.

IMO yes, and people really overrate them. Almost every year they are talked about as a top 3 team, huge cup threat etc etc. But other than their cup year, they get bounced in the first or 2nd round. And when they get bounced in round 2, its typically because they feasted on a weak opponent in round 1.
 
They've been past the second round 1 time. 1 f***ing time.

Of course they've underachieved. Most years you can point at management not giving them a proper 2C, but this year was just a pure choke job. Loosing to Dallas when the Stars didn't have the top defenseman and most productive forward is wildly embarrassing.

Can't wait to go 1-8 seeding again. I bet every hockey fans want this especially Oilers and Kings fans :laugh:

But at the same time you gotta beat the teams that are on your way to win the cup no matter which team. There's no excuse Avs have lost to Dallas 3 times in the last 5 years or something

No and yes.

Should they have won more than 1 cup by now? I don't think you can expect that. There are other great teams in the league too. Dallas hasn't won in a long time. Oilers either. Vegas has been great and also only won once.

Should they get deeper in the playoffs more regularly? Yes, I think that's a fair expectation.

These years shouldnt count towards any under-achievement label they were clearly building still as a bubble team in '18 & '19.

2020 was the start of high hopes but they had their 3rd string goalie play the remaining games of that dallas series I believe. Hard to win with the Michael Hutchinson as your starter.

2021 Vegas def stung, but no Kadri for that series due to a suspension in the first round
this was where you could make a case of cup expectations. they could have def beat vegas with Kadri and ultimately had a chance to take on Tampa for the cup.

Marchand and Bergeron and Boston by this logic has massively underachieved with their one cup in their career. If Mack and Makar go that same route ill agree but right now they are still in a position to take a crack at multiple cups. Sid didnt win again till almost 10 years after his first one.

In 2020 Hutch played game 5, 6 and 7. They won 5 and 6 and then lost in OT. He actually played pretty good. Also Dallas played the whole series, actually the whole playoffs with their back up also.

2021 I agree, they probably would have won with Kadri if he wasn't suspended. That will always be one of the Avs biggest mistakes letting him go.

All those teams are loaded with HoFs. Expecting the Avs to automatically dominate against them is absurd. That's not how sports works. A 3-2 lead against a team like that 2002 Detroit team means F all.

Shanahan, Federov, Hull, Lidstrom, Robitaille, Yzerman, Larianov, Chelios, Datsyuk, and Hasek in net......

lol yeah, that elimination game going back into Detroit must have been a cake walk....can't believe they blew that easy game.

This was the pre-salary cap era where 5ish teams just stacked their teams. The reason why the caps were put into place actually. If you weren't the Maple Leafs you could just buy and stack a team.
 
Is 2+ cups really the expectation these days? 1 cup seems average for a cup contender's window, the Avs had a lot going against them to pull off a repeat.

COVID, frozen salary cap and multiple significant injuries/suspensions in multiple years
Depth was an issue as a result, so they kept spending and losing their depth going into the playoffs
Prospects didn't pan out and rentals didn't pan out

You can point to a lot of management issues in there that prevented them from taking a shot at a 2nd cup for sure. But they also lost to the best teams in the West, so whether they lost in the 1st or 3rd round, they still lost to a true cup contender.

Now the question is if there's anymore magic they can find to open their window up a bit longer or if they'll drift off into obscurity the next 3-5 years until MacK declines and they have to rebuild.
 
Hard to be upset with a cup win considering how ridiculously hard it is to win one and the individual accolades are there are well. I would say no but I'm sure they'd love to go deeper in the playoffs more often.
 
Definitely not near a dynasty like one would hope, but....

13 franchises have won cups in the salary cap years with only 4 winning multiple cups.
Winning 1 with the MacK + Makar core and being competitive for the last decade is a pretty solid result in the cap era NHL

that's fair, khodobin was actually really good for that run though leading them to the finals. Hutchinson def played as good as he could be but yeah having a no.1 goalie in OT for game 7 could have been a difference maker.

yup the 2021 loss stings. the depth on that team was just as good as 2022 IMO, i think nichuskin was on the 3rd line (he wasnt yet the stud he ended up being the following year)

I never agree with this. In the West, the seeds 3-6 were separated by 5 points. So the Avs would have got the Kings who were 3 points ahead of them in the standings. They ended up losing to a team who didn't have their top forward or top defensemen.

It's on them not the seeding. Oh and their stupid GM who traded Rantanen.

Yes because they have the two best players in the world, but also no because every team except like 8 in the past 15 years would trade their next 10-20 years for that 1 Cup win. So playing with house money now.

So no context to playing Pacific teams more than Central teams and how that affects standings? Ok.

They were fairly seeded no matter how you look at it. Dallas had collected 1 fewer point or Colorado had one less win, they still meet in the first round with 1-8 seeding. Colorado ended up not being worthy of advancing. They started slow and didn't earn a top seed, so they had to play another good team. Good teams bow out in the 1st round every year. You have to rise above it like Edmonton or Florida did.
