Has Colorado’s core underachieved?.

1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002 should've been cup winning years IMO.

Stars had home ice both series. I don't think you can say they had significantly worse rosters.

They won a cup. That's really really hard to do. Every year there are at least 5 teams who are legit contenders, then another 5 who could take it with a good run, then a few more cinderella type stories. I would gladly take a decade of mediocrity for a cup, probably 2 or 3.

Why isn't Colorado challenging for a cup every year? Take out MacKinnon and Makar and what do you have? Rantanen is gone. Landeskog has been injured since that cup run. In order to go deep, the team is relying on Makar/MacKinnon to carry the team on their backs. Not going to happen every year.

Nah, it's just the fact that Sakic, Forsberg and Roy were a very dangerous 3-headed trio that nobody wanted the smoke with in the playoffs. From 1996-2004, both were respectively 1-2 in playoff scoring during that time stretch. 2nd place Forsberg (148pts) had a 42pt lead on Fedorov (106pts) and Roy lead with wins and sv% IIRC.

Hockey's a random game obvioulsy, but that Avs team had multiple chances of advancing to the cup finals where it was all but certain they would win vs whoever eastern team that made it to the last dance.

Their individual STAR POWER was something else

And let's just ignore that Red Wings team that won in 1998 and 2002. Lidstrom, Yzerman, Shanahan, Larionov, Federov....Why didn't the Avalanche just walk over those scrubs?

What about that 1999 Dallas team: Nieuwendyk, Hull, Hatcher, Modano, Belfour, etc...

How does anyone look at the rosters of those winning teams and conclude another team "should" have won.

The Avs squandered away a 3-2 series lead vs Dallas in 99, 3-2 lead vs Detroit in 2002, arguably would've had Forsberg do same thing in 98 akin what he did to Detroit in 99 and 2000, which would be, decimating them in 5 games no less if they didn't choke in the 1st round vs Edmonton.

New Jersey, Dallas, Detroit had HOF lead teams but their star power wasn't on the level of Colorado.

I'd take Sakic, Forsberg and Roy over 70% of the superstars on those respective teams.

A shit load of injuries, poor play and unfortunate circumstances made them underachieve.

Sure a cup is a great and all that matters, but sustained success should be the goal because one day that cup you won is 30 years in the past and not relevant. So yes. They won a cup, congrats to them. But since then? Nothing but exits from the playoffs despite being heavily favoured from all the pundits and media.

Colorados won 3 in 30 years.
 
I think the Avs would've won at least one more Cup if they had been as aggressive as they have the past two years during Makar's rookie contract/MacKinnon's cheap contract. They could've had overwhelming depth on top of the top tier talent since they had so much cap space.

100% certain if your team won a cup you’d rest on that laurel for years
 
No, and also this is what people were saying about Crosby/Malkin/Letang Penguins before they won a couple back-to-back and put an end to that conversation rather quickly. There's still plenty of time for MacK/Makar to add at least one more championship IMO.

Yah. Exactly my point. Those old cups don’t hold much weight today do they? Look at my oilers. 5 cup, last one in 90 six years before the avs first one. Doesn’t mean much to me and certainly not worth arguing over or using as some “gotcha” to prove a point online.

Winning the cup is everything for the players, it’s their accomplishment and no one can take that away from them ever. But as a fan it’s doesn’t mean anything. It’s doesn’t make you a better fan.

So your team wins a cup in 2022, it’s now 2052. Your team has had a run of bad luck. Getting knocked of the playoffs early for a years and then rebuilds and it doesn’t go smoothly. And it’s been a few years since you made the playoffs. Are you, as a fan still whipping and high diving that cup win in 2022 and using it as a point in arguments with other fans about why your team doesn’t suck?

I know for me in my 40s I’m not using the 90 cup win for the oilers for anything other than a historic fact. So you won it. Cool. Whats happening now?

Dude. That’s exactly my point. One day you will wake up and 30 years will pass and yesterday’s cup was 30 years ago.

Enjoy the moment. Enjoy the games and take it in. Time passes fast.
